Red carpet hair: golden globes 2012

Published 16th Jan 2012 by rachael
The 2012 Golden Globes saw an impressive array of stars strut up the red carpet, showcasing hairstyles ranging from sixties-style volume on Zooey Deschanel and Nicole Richie to flapper-look accessorised waves on Charlize Theron and Michelle Williams.

Here, we take a look at the very best of the red carpet hairstyles with commentary from Ian Davies at Ocean Hairdressing, Cardiff and Gary Hooker and Michael Young of Hooker & Young.

Zooey Deschanel nicole richie golden globes 2012 hair.jpg
Zooey Deschanel
ID: Zooey is kooky and cute and it looks as though she has been taking some style tips from Cher in the 60s or our very own Adele. The fringe adds a sexy touch and the shine is stunning, I think she'll be making a statement on the red carpets for quite some time.

Nicole Richie
ID: Beautiful! Quite simply - I have no critique. I love this high pony with a difference and the blunt fringe compliments her petite features.

Charlize Theron michelle williams golden globes 2012 hair.jpg
Charlize Theron
H&Y: Normally Charlize can do no wrong but this is a little too bridesmaid for our liking. It is too soft and subtle - a hair piece added to the low, side detail would have given a bit of much needed drama.

Michelle Williams
ID: Stunning! The hairband is a brave addition but it's fresh, quirky and refreshing on the red carpet. The strawberry blonde shade is stunning and adds warmth to her porcelain skin.

Emma Stone jessica alba golden globes 2012 hair.jpg
Emma Stone
H&Y: Emma is another one working the soft, dishevelled hair up but the key to this look is a good blow dry, which clearly she hasn't had. The finish isn't clean enough and brings the look down. Her dress and belt are beautiful and a smoother finish to the hair would have created the perfect style.

Jessica Alba
H&Y: Another one working the casual, swept back look but the difference is that Jessica has had the perfect blow-dry. This is the foundation for such a style and makes all the difference. This look is stunning and her hair colour is spot-on.

kate beckinsale lea michele golden globes 2012 hair.jpg
Kate Beckinsale
ID: She caused a Twitter frenzy last night and rightly so. Her look was slick and polished - this is a girl that knows how to do red carpet chic. I loved her tousled up do - sexy and with just the right amount of height at the roots. The warm truffle colour might not be particularly groundbreaking but it works perfectly and she knows it.

Lea Michele
ID: She's an absolutely beautiful girl but I would have liked to see Lea work a fresher, more contemporary look more in keeping with her age. A loose high ponytail or low ballet bun would have been cute and chic.

Kelly Osbourne sharon osbourne golden globes 2012 hair.jpg
Kelly Osbourne
ID: She's the daughter of Ozzy Osbourne and was never going to play it safe. I commend her attitude and fierceness but I'm not sure it works. Pastels are going to be big news this season but I would prefer to have seen a lighter lavender tone creeping through the hair rather than being so obvious at the roots - this is Hollywood after all. It's reminiscent of the Thakoon show at fashion week and I do love how fun it is.

Sharon Osbourne
ID: Sharon's hair hasn't changed a bit since she graced our screens on the The X Factor in 2006! She's usually the queen of reinvention so I can't help but feel a little bit disappointed that she hasn't revitalized her look.

Elle Macpherson reese witherspoon.jpg
Elle Macpherson
H&Y: Elle always has a fantastic blow-dry - here the hair is more tousled than normal and it looks good but the roots are bad. They are not exaggerated enough to work the dip-dyed trend and just look like bad regrowth.

Reese Witherspoon
ID: I really like Reese's beachy waves and her vanilla blonde suits her perfectly - I'm not sure she has the attitude to pull of the visible roots though; a trip to her stylist before the red carpet would have b een advised.

Claire Danes dianna agron golden globes 2012 hair.jpg
Clare Danes
H&Y: We're not feeling this look. We like the editorial feel but Clare has a prominent jaw line, and the shape of the hair reflects this, giving her an angular, rigid feel. Also, there is too much warmth at the roots, which isn't flattering her skintone.

Diana Agron
H&Y: There was a real trend for soft, disheveled hair ups at the Golden Globes this year and Diana has perfected the style. This is a perfect balance between the hair up and detailed dress, and statement lips.

Freida Pinto jessica biel golden globes 2012 hair.jpg
Freida Pinto
H&Y: We get what the stylist was hoping to achieve and there is clearly a trend for casual hair but the quiff should have had more form and shape for an event like the Golden Globes.

Jessica Biel
H&Y: There is a lot of detail in this dress and with the high neckline we would have preferred to see a delicate hair up. The contrast in colour between her dress and hair is beautiful, it's just a shame the finish of the hair is not to the same standard.

Jodie Foster kate winslet.jpg
Kate Winslet
ID: Kate looks as though she is trying to reinvent the 2011 Vogue cover that caused quite a media storm but I'm finding her hair quite predictable and it really doesn't excite me. She's quite a curvy girl and I'd like to see a bigger more glamorous style for the red carpet which would balance out and streamline her shape. I do love Kate as a blonde though and I like the hint of roots that are just creeping through.

Jodie Foster
ID: It can be hard to style short hair for the red carpet but Jodie's hair is just on the right side of glamorous. Her jaw-length bob frames her face perfectly and the combination of darker roots and Californian sun-kissed highlights add a natural lift to the style.

Julianne Moore golden globes 2012 hair.jpg
Julianne Moore
ID: Stunning and glamorous! I absolutely adore Julianne's rich auburn colour - it works perfectly with her skin tone and the emerald green earrings accentuate this perfectly. It's a vintage inspired look and highlights her porcelain skin well. However going forward, I think I'd like  Julianne to opt for a fresher look - maybe a long bob.

Sofia Vergara
ID: Sofia's hair is beautiful - glamorous, trendy and sexy; she has managed to tick every box and boy does she know it. Her shine is beautiful - it wouldn't surprise me if she had had a keratin treatment before walking the red carpet.

Debra Messing helen mirren golden globes 2012 hair.jpg
Helen Mirren
H&Y: Helen looks beautiful. The hair is soft and sophisticated and the natural colour shines perfectly. She is working this look perfectly with the delicate earrings.

Andie MacDowell salma hayek golden globes hair 2012.jpg
Andie MacDowell
H&Y: This is a beautiful, classic red carpet style and Andie wears it perfectly. The dressed style swoops round the neck to balance and complement the dress. The glossy colour and shine throughout the curls means this look never fails.

Salma Hayek
ID: Salma is one glamorous lady - her hair was stunning last night. I love the sun-kissed ends, it's subtle and warm enough to suit her olive skintone. Her voluminous waves ensured she lead the style stakes on the red carpet.

Heidi Klum nicole kidman golden globes 2012 hair.jpg
Heidi Klum
H&Y: Heidi is another one that can normally do no wrong but this look is a poor show for such a prestigious awards ceremony. We hate to say it but those highlights are too severe and the roots look a little greasy!

Nicole Kidman
ID: Nicole's peachy shade is stunning but the length ages her and the ends looks a bit dead. I'd trim a good three or four inches and leave a blunt edge to give a healthier look to her style.

tilda swinton evan rachel wood hair golden globes 2012.jpg
Tilda Swinton
ID: Tilda truly leads the style stakes - she takes risk and her look has an edge with her androgynous style. I love that she has added some glamour with the voluminous quiff -  a look which will make a big comeback in S/S 12.

Evan Rachel Wood
H&Y: Evan's hair should be softer - in this style, it's not flattering her face shape and with such a low neckline she could have worked a looser style. When you pull hair from the face it shows any imperfections in the highlights, and while her colour may be stunning when the hair's down, it doesn't work when pulled back.

Angelina Jolie natalie portman golden globes 2012 hair.jpg

Angelina Jolie
H&Y: Angelina's hair is nondescript but has been created on purpose - to make it all about the face. This is a hard look to pull off especially on a red carpet but Angelina is so statuesque that she works it effortlessly.

Natalie Portman
ID: I absolutely adore Natalie's style, it's modern and contemporary but with a nod to vintage styles of the 20s. She has such a pretty, delicate face and this style highlights this well.

Madonna sarah michelle gellar golden globes 2012 hair.jpg
Madonna
ID: Oh Madonna - where to begin. Madonna's style is aging her dramatically and I think she's stuck in a bit of a rut. I don't think her hair colour works at all with her skin tone - it drains her of warmth and looks a bit like home colour. I'd like to see her with a sleek bob and go back to her natural brunette shade.

Sarah Michelle Gellar
ID: Sarah has been quite off the radar lately and she obviously wanted to make an impressionable comeback last night; that she certainly did. Her power ponytail was just on the right side of sweet and innocent whilst still showing her fearless side.

Mila Kunis rooney mara golden globes 2012 hair.jpg
Rooney Mara
ID: She's the girl of the moment and looked fierce last night. Slick, edgy and grungy but with a red carpet polish. I love that she opted for shine - it would have been easy to go for a matte grunge look but she mixes it up well.

Mila Kunis
ID: Mila is stunning and looked fierce last night. Her hair was polished and sleek and has a gorgeous shine! If I'm being picky I would have liked to see more volume and a looser fringe as the slickness does not work as well as it could with her round face shape.
