Playing safe when it comes to style

rexfeatures_boy George.jpgThere's been a lot of harking back to the 80s lately. Sunday nights on BBC 2 have been dedicated to the decade, with the recent Worried About the Boy docu-drama about Boy George one of the highlights.

Seeing some of the outrageous characters who thrived back then on the club scene, it makes me wonder if we'll ever see a movement like New Romantics and the whole gender bending trend of the early/mid 80s - before Stock Aitken and Waterman sanitised the music industry - again.

Seeing how so many bands and music industry icons made it into the charts via the club scene, rather than being churned out by a record label, it's not hard to understand why fashion designers and hairdressers are having to look back for inspiration.

rexfeatures_duran duran.jpgWhen it comes to male icons in the world of music, who do we really have that is likely to create a major new dynamic in style? Where are the Duran Durans, the Bowie's or the Human Leagues of this generation? Hasn't it all got just a little bit too safe?
