Playing safe when it comes to style

Seeing some of the outrageous characters who thrived back then on the club scene, it makes me wonder if we'll ever see a movement like New Romantics and the whole gender bending trend of the early/mid 80s - before Stock Aitken and Waterman sanitised the music industry - again.
Seeing how so many bands and music industry icons made it into the charts via the club scene, rather than being churned out by a record label, it's not hard to understand why fashion designers and hairdressers are having to look back for inspiration.
When it comes to male icons in the world of music, who do we really have that is likely to create a major new dynamic in style? Where are the Duran Durans, the Bowie's or the Human Leagues of this generation? Hasn't it all got just a little bit too safe?
