People's choice awards red carpet hair

Hollywood kicked off its award season with the 35th Annual People's Choice Awards at the Shrine Auditorium.

Naturally, the glitterati were out in full force, showing off their gorgeous gowns and the ultimate in red carpet hairstyles.

While The Dark Knight was the big winner in the auditorium, who stole the show in the hairstyle stakes? We asked some top hairdressers to rate the main contenders...

Paris Hilton

"Paris' hair has been blowdryed and then curled using straightening irons to frame the hair around the face. It looks like she has hair pieces in her hair too, which makes this style really easy for clients to recreate themselves using clip-in extensions, such as Colormatch from Goldwell."

"This look is sophisticated and extremely safe. It suits Debra and her simple outfit but I would like to have seen a smoother finish to the crown area. Debra's natural colour has been deepened, it looks rich and glossy and suits her complexion perfectly."

Jodin Sparks

"Jordin's hair looks wonderfully shiny in this picture. The bold placement of copper throughout the hair adds warmth, however, I personally would have gone for a softer, subtle colour technique. A few tonal highlights around the face would have given a more delicate finish."

"I love the colour here, this velvet blonde shade is multi-dimensional and works perfectly with her skin tone.

Her hair looks like it has been relaxed and then softly blow-dryed to give a natural finish with light bounce."

Some stars just aren't content with one look for a big night out. Carrie Underwood pulled-off two glam looks and Beverly C talks us through her transformation.

"Carrie has managed to pull off two very simple, yet pretty looks. So simple in fact that she could do this herself if she wanted. Her first look (hair-up) is an undone chignon, which is very now and easy to achieve. The secret is to have a great blowdry then finish the hair well to create shiny hair with lots of body. A great product to use her would be Double Boost from Goldwell to get lift at the roots, and finish the hair with Jewel Shimmer to leave hair lightly defined with lots of sparkle!

For Carrie's next look she has simply let her chignon down and given it a shake to create these tumbling waves. The front section has been softly swept back into a quiff. You need a very soft, young or well botoxed forehead to pull off this look!"
