I recently caught up with top barber, educator and Andis ambassador, MK. You can also read this interview and much more in the latest issue of HJ Men out today and also available to download as part of the HJ Plus app.

What attracted you to the barbering Industry?
The main reason was wanting independence - I started at a young age.
Knowing that with the earnings I could control my future without depending on my parents was a big attraction for me. I also liked the idea of having the ability to make someone feel good. Also, it made me a popular person within the community!

What makes a good men's haircut?
Listening to the client's needs, understanding the environment they work and play in, attention to detail and good tools.
Put all those aspects together to create a style which allows the client to style it, so your cut can look good when out of the salon. A good cut perks up a man's confidence allowing his personality to make an impact on the world.

Why is training others so important to you?
There are not many barbers t who have attended college for qualifications for many reasons, this has resulting in a lack of theoretical knowledge within the industry. I deliver training and seminars to colleges, salons and barbers around the UK, helping bridge the gap between them. I enjoy passing on skills and knowledge, raising quality and the profile of barbering which is at the forefront of what I do. As the industry moves forward so does opportunity making it a more interesting and desirable for all - not least parents who will want to encourage their children to enter this fabulous trade.

What trends do you see being huge in men's hairdressing next year?
I think we will see a lot more hair tattooing within the younger generation, with older guys trying more beard styles for diversity. As the fashion moves more down the English textiles route, more of the traditional gent cuts will be revived, no doubt with a modern twist.

What advice would you offer to anyone wanting to carve a successful career in barbering/men's hairdressing?
It's a must to subscribe to industry magazines such as HJ as they will keep you in touch with what is happening. Always take pictures of your work because then you will become your own critic and help teach yourself.
We have all gone on holiday taken pictures and a few years later commented: "What was I wearing and who did my hair it looks terrible" It will be the same way when you look at your hair styles.

What male celebs do you feel are great men's hair icons?
Taylor Lautner from Twilight or the younger man and George Clooney for the older man.
