Meet jonathan andrew from jamie stevens, london Jonathan Andrew of Jamie Stevens London, is following in his mentor’s footsteps as a men’s hairdressing maestro What do you love about cutting men’s hair? I love being able to change how a guy looks, and I’ve always found with men’s hair that simple tweaks can dramatically change a final look which gives me as a stylist much more room for creativity. What styles are your male clients requesting? Mostly clients request the usual Ryan Gosling or David Beckham look but more often than not the picture they’ll show you is from a red carpet event and is styled to perfection, which is just not possible for clients everyday if they’re just drying their hair with a towel. I’ve been re-evaluating the way I consultations with male clients, taking inspiration from how a Saville Row tailor would begin with a client. This way I can break down each aspect of the look and work with the client to find their perfect look; this process gives me a bit more freedom and allows me to guide the client in a direction that will benefit them, rather than just to replicate something that won’t work long-term. Who are your male style icons? It really depends on how I’m feeling! The timeless ones that never change are Paul Newman, Sinatra and Steve McQueen as they are the founders of cool in my opinion so I always look to them. Currently, with longer hair in fashion, it’s more of a mix Mark Wahlberg and Jason Momoa. Where else do you get inspiration from for your men’s haircuts and collections? Trends obviously play a big part in this for every hairdresser but I see a lot of amazing work on Instagram that can really get the mind working. Who inspires you in men’s hairdressing and barbering? Obviously Jamie Stevens. when I joined had knowledge of men’s hairdressing and had taught myself a lot when it came to barbering, so to have Jamie guide me in the right direction and help me progress has been amazing. I also love seeing what people like Chris Foster, Kevin Luchmun, the boys at Ruger barbers and Schorem and the guys over in the states are coming up with, there is so much positivity in the industry at the moment it’s great to be a part of it. What have been your men’s hairdressing career highlights? I have had an amazing few years with men’s hair, there has been so much, obviously winning two Hair magazine awards this year so far has been great but on a personal one I would have to say reaching the final for Men’s Hairdresser of the Year at the British Hairdressing Awards on my first try was huge.
