Jennifer Linton, 27, is co-founder of the multi-award-winning Linton & Mac salon in Aberdeen. Here she talks about her career journey so far and her plans for the future.
"I started as a Saturday girl when I was 14. At 19 I moved to Aberdeen as a fully qualified stylist and ran my own column for seven years. From a very young age, I have always thought that the hairdressing industry was super glamorous - this, along with the fact that I could play with hair all day and get to meet new people, was a huge attraction.
I love the variety
My job differs every single day. I’m so lucky that I get to travel a lot, meeting with industry peers and suppliers, and working on great projects. My role at Linton & Mac is very varied. I train our juniors on a Monday, work with our team on exciting new projects, spend as much time as possible with my amazing clients, and also keep on top of the admin, payroll, and HR for the salon.
I get to meet, work and train alongside some of the most talented people in the industry, and travel to places that I never thought I would have the opportunity to visit. What I love the most is working at Linton & Mac – a salon that I designed and founded with my business partner J Macdonald. Our team is the best and we have a great laugh as well as sharing the same passion for hair. Transforming my clients and making them happy is my number-one priority.
Who do I admire?
It’s hard to name one person that I admire the most in this industry, but I do admire Paul Windle and Neil Moodie (Windle & Moodie). They have the most amazing work ethos, and have been a brilliant support for us since we opened the salon. J and myself aspire to be like these guys, as what they offer is very similar to what we want out of our team and salon environment. They focus a lot on training, but also find the time for session work and travelling.
My future goals
As for our long-term goals, I’m delighted to say that we have already achieved a couple this year. We won the 2017 L’Oréal Colour Trophy in our second year of entering. What I’m most excited about is our shortlist in the Independent Salon – Business Newcomer category at the British Hairdressing Business Awards 2017. Winning or being shortlisted for awards of this calibre confirms to us that we are on the right track, and gives us an extra boost to continue to achieve in the future. Moving forward, we will continue to work hard on growing our brand. It’s very important to us that we do this properly and with integrity."
