Make-up for mature skin: helen mirren leads the way

Dame Helen Mirren stepped out this week looking fabulous in a ruby dress for the Red 2 premiere in London. The actress, who is well-known for proving that you don't have to be in your twenties to be gorgeous, also gave us a masterclass in make-up for the over 60s with her elegant look. According to Rupert Kingston, Creative Director at New CID Cosmetics, "The real key to getting make up right as we get older is understanding that often it is less about eye makeup and more about blusher and lipstick." "Let’s face it, as we get older and gravity takes effect, it becomes increasingly difficult to apply eye shadow which in some cases can actually accentuate wrinkles, "continues Rupert. " Helen Mirren understands this only too well." Here are Rupert's top tips for beautiful make-up on older clients: - Start with the skin. After you have moisturised, apply a foundation primer. Primers will make the skin look smoother, helps foundation apply more evenly and will help the make-up to last longer. Try New CID Cosmetics i-prime. - As we get older, the skin becomes pinker and more ruddy, so choose a yellow-based foundation to give an even glowing skin tone. Avoid using too much powder as this can look cakey on the skin. YSL Touch Éclat foundation is luminous and has some great shades - A pop of a fresh pink blush on the apples of the cheeks can make the skin look youthful and fresh. Try New CID Cosmetics i-glow in Ice Pop. - To combat sallow looking skin choose a fresh, bright colour for the lips, avoiding brown shades. If you have fuller lips like Helen be bold with reds  and fuchsias, if you have slimmer lips try rose pinks and soft corals. - Finally keep your eye makeup simple. Be careful with colours that are too shimmery; pearly is fine but stay away from the shimmer! Instead of powder use a cream eye shadow, they are less likely to crease. Apply to the moving part of the eyelid only and leave the brow bone bare. Dot a dark liner in between the lower lashes and finish with plenty of mascara. Try Bobbi Brown Long wear Cream eye shadow and New CID Cosmetics i-flutter Black Mascara.
