Mack in Chelmsford have beaten talented hairdressers from around the country to win the coveted L'Oreal Professionnel Colour Trophy 2008.

The Essex salon's on-trend curls, complemented by shades from chocolate to copper to mahogany, beat Royston Blythe, Compton, and Toni & Guy, Camberley, into second and third place respectively.

Clipso owner Terry Calvert, who was part of the top quality judging panel, said: "Everyone on this stage could have won. The work was beautiful."

Thirty-two countries around the world now run Colour Trophy competitions, but International General Manager Nicolas Hieronimus says that the quality of work displayed at London's Earls Court 2 stood out for the crowd.

"Britain is the home of the most breathtakingly creative hairdressing in the world," he said. "What we have seen tonight is that hairdressing is not just a profession, it is an art ."

Earlier in the day, a judging panel that included industry icons Guy Kremer, Hooker & Young, Errol Douglas MBE and Lisa Shepherd had gathered at the L'Oreal Academy in Hammersmith to witness all the Grand Finalists who were tasked with recreating their looks live.

The judges narrowed down the finalist to a winner from each of the regions before selecting Mack as the overall Colour Trophy Winners for 2008.

Announcing the regional winners, Charles Worthington MBE said: "Congratulations to everone who entered, that was the first very brave step.

"Among the finalists we have seen much passion but also lots of innovation. This will be a life changing experience for the winner."

As well as the nail-biting competition, guests enjoyed stunning hair shows by Andrew Collinge and Alan Edwards' art teams as well as a catwalk show by top London fashion designer Marios Schwab, complemented by hair from British Hairdresser of the Year Angelo Seminara.
