Emily Hart from Errol Douglas is the current winner of Clothes Show Young Hairdresser of the Year, presented by HJi and supported by Your Hair.As preparation for this year's competition gets under way, we caught up with Emily to see how her life has changed since winning.
"Winning hasn't just affected my career," says Emily, "it's completely changed it." Since taking the title, she has been promoted within the salon, and is now managing a thriving column. "Lots of our clients have read about the award," she explains, "which has kept me very busy."
The prestigious prize garnered plenty of interest, both locally and further afield. "The coverage after I won was great," reveals Emily. "I have a stack of magazines at home that I've been keeping since December, and even now, seven months down the line, I'm still seeing new articles."
As well as pocketing a cheque for £1,000 - which is being put towards her next shoot - the prize has also given Emily the opportunity to take part in more photo shoots and shows, including a cover shoot for HJ with Jamie Stevens.
Describing the experience as "absolutely amazing", Emily adds: "I learnt so much from Jamie; I felt like a junior again. He's a very talented guy and it was a fantastic day." So what advice would Emily give to hopefuls in this year's contest? "Have a look at what winning images have been achieved in previous years, and try and do something a bit different that will stand out."
Don't forget that you'll be judged on cut, colour, photography and presentation - demonstrating your work live on stage to a crowd of thousands if you reach the final 20. Now is the time to brush up on all aspects of your hairdressing skills for a well-rounded, professional entry.
Emily says that winning has really opened her eyes to all the other competitions out there for young hairdressers, which are by far the best way to get yourself noticed.
