There’s no way to say ‘commitment’ quite like matching hair do’s. Earlier this week, Pete Davidson debuted his platinum blonde taper cut to match partner Kim Kardashian, who made the overnight transformation for the Met Gala last month - where she paid tribute to Marilyn Monroe.
Kim Kardashian took to her Instagram story to show off their looks and cement their couple status. Long-term couples often start to adopt their partners mannerisms, crack the same jokes or wear the odd co-ordinated outfit – but it’s no surprise that Kim and Pete took it up a notch.
"I’m getting flashbacks to the shots of Britney & Justin double denim days, Gwyneth & Brad matching blonde crops, and Posh & Becks leather styling era and morphing into each other. They’re a real power couple now!” says Jonathon Andrew, global ambassador for Fudge Professional.
Pete’s take on the look is near-white with an ash undertone, whereas Kim’s locks appear brighter and creamier. This might not be the first time each of them have ventured to the blonde side, but it's the first time they've done it together - is this...couple goals?
“I’m loving this new matching couple colour trend! Especially when it comes to blondes. If you can, why not!? When these types of colour changes become news in the media, we often start to see more guys coming into the salon to ask for a colour change and elevated service. It’s good for business," says Adele Clarke, owner of Spectrum Hair and OSMO ambassador.
Both being natural brunettes, their roots appear darker than the rest of their hair, creating depth but also, highlighting one downside of bold looks like this - regrowth.
As romantic as this display of affection was, we’re focused on the bigger commitment they’ve both made – the commitment to the upkeep of platinum hair. We spoke to a few experts about what the blonde lifestyle means for clients and the role they should play in maintaining the look.
"You need to be fully committed to the blonde life once you start. Once they start lightening their hair, they are signing a 'virtual' contract and they need to commit to regular appointments, amazing professional products and less heat styling," explains Emma Grave, Pulp Riot Artist.
