"Because last year was the first year of the competition, I had no idea how big it would be and I didn't know much about it. I just saw the competition in HJ and decided to enter.

"I got through the first round and was asked to go along to the Clothes Show Live to compete in the final. I had to re-create the look I had originally submitted and the judges came around and spoke to me about it. Six of us then went through to the final.

"I couldn't quite believe how big the show was and I was quite nervous when the judges asked me questions.

"Before I was announced as the winner, the finalists had to present their models on the main stage. It was incredibly daunting as there were 6,000 people looking at my model and it seemed to take forever to walk around the stage.

"When it was announced that I had won, I was totally lost for words. I was presented with a trophy, some flowers and a cheque for £1,000. I also won a photoshoot with Anthony Mascolo, and the look will appear on the cover of HJ and Your Hair."

She adds: "It's been absolutely brilliant winning the Young Hairdresser of the Year competition.

"I bought a car with the money and the exposure has been so good for the salon. It's been covered in lots of hair magazines; my clients were coming into the salon bringing in cuttings from magazines with me in and they really responded well to it.

"This is a great competition to enter and the exposure you get from it is fantastic. My advice to anyone entering is to stick to hair that is commercial and wearable. Don't try anything that's avant garde and go for mainstream, high street hair.

"I'd also recommend having a very clear vision of why you have created your look and be well prepared to answer the judges' questions about your inspiration.

"The best part about winning the Young Hairdresser of the Year competition has been the exposure, and of course the money has been lovely!

"I'm really looking forward to entering again this year."
