John wood awarded mbe for services to hairdressing

John Wood is the owner of the two Clarity salons in Manchester and recently launched the Tie Towel. He received his MBE in 2009.
Why do you think you received the award?
It's a combination of my local charity work and also the 40 years in hairdressing during which I've been able to help many hairdressers get started in the industry.
What did you do to get it?
Nothing! I was put forward by a long-standing client and the first I found out about the nomination was when I was sent a letter asking me if I'd accept the reward if I received it. I couldn't believe it. I only had to tick a yes or no box but it still took me 30 minutes to get my head around what it was all about... and of course I said 'yes'!
How did it feel when you found out?
It was a relief - I hadn't been able to tell anyone about the first letter (other than my wife) and so I had this huge secret for about a month that I couldn't share. I then received a letter addressed to me as MBE and I knew it was real! It's a great privilege to receive this award and be recognised for the work I've been doing and the money that has been raised. I had the TV station down to film me, the Manchester Evening News did a feature on me and I was also on the BBC Radio Manchester - it was non-stop but great fun!
Is it important that hairdressers get recognised?
Our industry is so giving - educationally and from a charity point of view. We're business people who are creative and there is no reason why we shouldn't be recognised for our expertise in industry. My award was for local community and services to hairdressing and that's pretty much spot on. I'm pleased to be in an industry where we do make a difference.
Who would you like to see get an award?
I was really pleased that Toni Mascolo was awarded an OBE in 2008 and that Vidal Sassoon received one this year as they've both made such an impact on our industry. Personally I'd like to see more 'everyday' hairdressers who do lots for charity and our industry get recognition too.
