One of the North’s top hairdressers, Jamilla Paul, will be appearing in a new MTV reality TV series that focuses on the highs and lows of eight appearance-obsessed young people desperate for a career in the beauty industry.
From hairdressing, waxing and massaging to body building, personal training, tattooing and more, the series of masterclasses facing the eight beauty students has been designed to give them a taste of the industry and to begin to hone their skills before they practise on real clients. But not before Jamilla says so.
“I’m the boss, the lead mentor, and I’ll be setting them tasks, finding out what they like and what they are good at, and nurturing them so they can actually do it,” says Jamilla. “This show isn’t about humiliating them or laughing at their failures, although there will be lots of tears and laughter, but about helping them understand what they need to learn to have a successful career in this industry.”
Most of the series has been filmed on location at Jamilla’s flagship salon in Rochdale.
Jamilla, who celebrates 15 years in business this week, was chosen because of her down-to-earth, no-nonsense approach and her ability to inspire the best in her team. Owner of two hair and beauty salons in Greater Manchester, she is also a natural and popular educator with Wella.
“I’m not sure what the producers thought they were getting when they hired me, but I’m determined the programme will not belittle the industry. I will focus on tasks that will reveal the best side of hairdressing and beauty, and the level of commitment needed to master the crafts,” she said.
Beauty School Copout premieres on MTV on Tuesday 29 October 2013 at 10pm.
