I've been every hair colour under the sun - and now i've gone green!
I'm not always the most environmentally aware person in the world. Yes, I recycle and I've taken to wearing mineral make-up (fair play to the sales assistant, she gave me a great sales pitch!) but I'm not the best at turning the lights out when I leave the room, only printing what I need or buying organic products.
However, with a mini-me on the way, I thought that perhaps it was time for me to make a few more environmentally concious decisions, so taking it one step at a time, I decided to start with organic hair colour.
So, off I trekked up to Karine Jackson's London salon - via the obscenely hot underground (oh my god!) for a re-vamp.
Karine told me that since she's been using Organic Systems she's had a lot of clued-up clients - a lot of them pregnant of recovering from cancer treatment - who have done their research online and wanted to try something with a few less chemicals.
The choice of colour wasn't as varied as I'm used to and Karine told me that going lighter than my base colour wasn't an option. She also warned me that it wouldn't give total grey coverage - then flattered me by saying that wouldn't be a problem for me!
We chose a warm brown a couple of shades darker than my natural colour and it was applied like any other hair colour. The smell was fine - I'd even go as far as to say it was pleasant. The down side was that I then had to sit under a heat ring for 10 minutes while the colour developed - great on a cold winter's day, not so good when it's 30 degrees outside.
Then it was time for the big reveal. The colour is, well, exactly the same as the swatch I choose; it has a great shine (even if I say so myself) and I'm happy with the result.
There are definitely some limitations with going for organic hair colour (mentioned above), but I have to say that my first experience was a positive one and one that I'd repeat - certainly until bump makes an appearance.
