Award season got off to a sparkling start with the National Board of Review Awards Gala. We spoke to Sandy Caird at Hair by JFK, Edinburgh for her thoughts on the nights most talked-about red carpet looks.

Teen sensation Chloe Moretz adds a bit of glamour to her young boho look which is perfect for this occasion. By creating large soft waves with ghd's or a heat wand, hair can be ruffled into the loose boho style with the help of Schwarzkopf Dust It to add some volume and texture. Chloe finished her look with a sparkling brooch, which adds a bit of sparkle to her relaxed style.

Helen Mirren

Leading lady Helen Mirren was looking classically stylish with an elegant black number and her signature light blonde bob that had some glamorous curls added for the occasion. I'd like to see some warmer tones added to her colour though, as this tone is slightly too pale against her cool skin tone.

Keira Knightly

Keira Knightly worked the red carpet perfectly sporting a very wearable soft, curly bob that looks effortlessly chic. Her classic bob is given a relaxed finish with soft curls created by using a heated wand. This style can be finished with a little matte wax to give texture and hold for a contemporary look.

hoosing a fail-safe red carpet number and slickly-groomed bob, Naomi looked chic for her spotlight moment. Her longer graduated bob has had some soft layers added to give movement and texture while light, caramel slices give a brightness and multi-tonal texture.

Rooney Mara

No stranger to the red carpet recently, Rooney has a simple-but- effective style that is sophisticated yet slightly daring, like her character in Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Her barely-there make-up sets off the sleek, extra shiny low chignon. The side-parting and dropped chignon could be finished with sparkle spray for a chic and glossy look.

Tilda Swinton

This is my favourite look form the evening as Tilda always gets it right with a slightly edgy look that doesn't conform. Her short crop and undercut have been softened by a voluminous blow-dry, which has created movement and body. The delicate peach and caramel tones are perfect for her porcelain skin and soften her masculine style.

Opting for an understated glamour statement, Viola Davis has a cool, sophisticated bob with shattered edges that is highlighted by this season's accessory: high gloss. The gorgeous chocolate shade complements her skin tone and with the use of a keratin-infused blow dry the bob will remain sleek and glossy.
