I want that job! tai walker at mahogany I Want That Job! Tai Walker at Mahogany Tai Walker is head of colour at Mahogany hairdressing and travels the world presenting their education programme as well as looking after clients in their two London salons. When did you decide you wanted to be a hairdresser? When I was finishing my education I had several career paths that I wanted to take – landscape design, a chef, interior design…. All artistic careers, but hairdressing was the world that I decided to follow. Where did you train? I took on an apprenticeship with a well-known global hair company, before finishing my training at Joshua Galvin. What was your first job like? BUSY! As an assistant I was based in Covent Garden and I can remember on Saturdays never getting to leave the backwash! When did you fall in love with colour and decide to make it your career path? I decided really early on in my training that I wanted to specialise in colour and form – about three months in I think. This wasn’t really a surprise to me, as in school my two favourite subjects were art and science. Colour is a field that combines the two. When did you join Mahogany? I joined Mahogany in 2005, making this my tenth year! How important is it for you to work for a salon that supports your education and artistic work? For me, working as part of the Mahogany Creative team is paramount to ensure that my artistic flair is used to its full potential. The fact that everyone is able to express their ideas and view an opinion, no matter their level, means that we continue to innovate and ultimately, inspire. What’s been your career highlight so far? Becoming head of colour for Mahogany Hairdressing. What’s your next career goal? To continue to strive for perfection. What piece of advice would you give your student self? There’s always room for improvement! Looking for your next career move? Take a look at HJi Jobs for all of the latest hair and beauty job opportunities! galleryWidgetDec14
