Katie Mulcahy has gone from being on the FAME Team to ambassador for RUSK hair and finalist at the British Hairdressing Awards. We find out more about her career so far.
When did you decide you wanted to be a hairdresser?
I decided I wanted to be a hairdresser when I was 14. I had my hair cut in a salon in my hometown of Stafford, and was inspired by the buzz and how fashionable everyone seemed! I was hooked.
Where did you train?
I trained with the Francesco Group whilst working for a tiny independent salon in Stafford. It was a great start for me as their training is renowned for being one of the best in the country.
What was your first job like?
My first job was in a tiny salon above a Balti restaurant! It was a friendly, regular clientele type of salon with three talented stylists. It was here that I learnt the foundations and it taught me great customer service skills.
How did being on the FAME Team shape where your career was going?
Being in the FAME Team was, without question, career changing and an unforgettable experience. It helped me to gain more knowledge - from my team mates as well as industry legends - and gave me a more in-depth knowledge of the industry. It also raised my profile, enabling me to step up to the next level. I met the most inspirational people which just made me crave more from my career.
Did you ever feel you needed to move to London to further your career?
I was asked and encouraged to move to London all the time, but I've never felt the need to permanently relocate, even though I am there all the time. I am proud of where I am from and I strongly don't believe you have to be in London to go places. There are lots of cool things going on further north and I will always stay true to my roots.
Do you feel you had to be more self-motivated to make a name for yourself outside of London?
There are lots of big names in London and you do have to have lots of motivation to keep travelling down, but I love being in different places so for me, that was never an issue. Being out of London only made me more determined to prove to everyone that I can be a success and still be based where my clients, friends and family are. I feel lucky that I have it all in that respect.
What’s been the highlight of your career so far?
Being a finalist for Midlands Hairdresser of the Year at the British Hairdressing Awards. After many years of sitting with other finalists, seeing myself of the big screen with my own collection up for everyone to see is a feeling that I won't forget. I still strive to achieve that goal again.
What’s your next career goal?
My next career goal is to win a British Hairdressing Award! I won't stop until I do. I would also like to invest in a salon and help others to achieve their goals and ambitions just like I have mine.
What piece of advice would you give your student self?
To believe in yourself! I had so many moments when I was told I was not good enough or let situations overwhelm me. Really hard work and determination really do pay off, so keep doing what you’re doing and believe you will get there.
