The Technique

I swear by the Curly Girl Method, a haircare technique all about enhancing natural curls, while maintaining health and hydration. This method involves taking hair from wet to dry with tools and techniques that maximize curl definition and volume – it also advises to steer clear of sulphates, towel-drying hair and brushes (use wide tooth combs!)

When drying curls, I take the hair from wet to dry using the Falco diffuser and Afro pik to enhance curls and coils. Gentle diffusing allows the curls to dry without frizz, the aim here is not to disturb the curl pattern too much. The temperature of the dryer should not be too hot and only hover over the hair until the hair is at least 80% dry. Once dry, flip the hair over and start to dry closer to the roots, then keep diffusing until hair is 100% dry.

Key Products

Your dryer attachments are key to this look. I used both the Afro pik attachment and the diffuser attachments here to enhance the curls and coils. I used the Titanium Expression Curling Tongs when picking out different sections to add more curl – alternating between different barrel sizes really helps give the hair a more natural look and feel.

Top Tips

  1. Starting with freshly washed detangled hair, apply your wet products to wet hair… do not towel dry hair first!

  2. Alternate curling tongs only on areas the hair shows frizz… using the two sizes will leave the curl looking natural.

  3. I liked to use the pik attachment to stretch the roots to make curls appear longer and more worn in.
