The financial climate is reportedly improving but competition is still fierce on the high street, so now is the time to invest in your salon business - but how do you prioritise where to spend your hard-earned cash? Neville Hair & Beauty director

Lavagni gives us her six tips for staying ahead in business.
Keep investing in training and seminars
It's more important than ever to invest in your staff’s technical and practical knowledge, providing them with good-quality training. This is also a good way of showing staff members how important they are to you and that they are a valued asset to the brand. The artistic team is the face and the base of the company. To run any business the foundation has to be strong.
Invest in your property
The traditional look of the salon is outdated, so if you know yours is stuck in a rut then redesign or upgrade the exterior of your salon to tempt passers by to pop in. When money is tight and clients might consider a hair or beauty service a luxury, the salon has to look beautiful, clean and attractive to draw them in to treat themselves.
Ensure you make a great first impression
A first impression is the last Impression and it always counts more than ever when competition is tough, because people need to feel satisfaction and that any expenditure is reasonable. Consider everything from the music that is playing in your salon to the staff uniform, and create a warm atmosphere and young buzzy environment - clients want to enter a happy location - and the way they are greeted on arrival and departure are equally important.
Offer wonderful customer service
Outstanding client service is always very important, but never more so than when the competition is stepping up its game and clients demand value for money. But don't forget that little extras such as good coffee and respect for your clients are sure to boost your business.
Use your information
Don't just invest in a proper salon computer system - use it wisely! A salon system is a mine of information which can help you to boost your business, track performance, market to clients and more.
Know what your clients wants in bad and good situations
If you know your clients are unhappy about something, then you can make changes.
Always remember every single positive action that you implement will give you a very successful business.
