How Blowdries Can Boost Your Salon Business

Published 17th Jul 2023 by Josie Jackson

While many clients have a hairdryer at home, it’s rare that they can achieve the same standard blow-dry as a professional can, which is why they possess so much potential for your business. From styling blowdries to treatments such as Brazilian blowdries, we want to help stylists boost their bookings. So, to help you get the most out of your blowdry services, we sat down with some experts to hear what methods you can implement to boost your appointments.

Blowdries are a great service as they are incredibly versatile; in addition to working for all hair lengths, they can address different needs such as smoothing, adding volume and body, or prepping for a hair-up. They can also be performed by any member of staff, which Sharon Malcom, Denman Ambassador, believes makes them accessible to a wider range of clients, as this allows for a range of price points. Are you utilising your apprentices and Junior Stylists to promote blowdries? She also explains: “It also means that there is more availability for blow-dry appointments as nine times out of ten, the senior stylists are fully booked with cuts and colours, which means that if the junior stylist is free they can do the blow-dry.”

While blowdries are a fundamental skill every hairdresser needs, this doesn’t mean you and your team can become complacent – especially with new trends constantly emerging alongside old trends resurfacing. Brandon Messinger, Denman Ambassador, touches on this point, explaining: “We try and have as many training days throughout the year as possible to make sure that everyone is up to date on their blow dry training and on their skill set in general.”

But with clients already familiar with blow-dry services, what can you do to boost these bookings? Laura Elliott, Head of Education at Salon Promotions suggests: “The Glaze Hollywood Blow-dry is a lovely option to add to your service menu. It’s a simple and cost-effective add-on or stand-alone treatment to offer your clients, leaving hair with incredible shine and manageability.”

Elena Lavagni, from Neville Hair and Beauty, also discusses the benefits of offering bespoke blowdries, sharing: "After Covid, we noticed a sharp increase in requests for blowdries and launched our blow-dry bar, which includes our regular 45 and 60 minute blowdries for all types of hair textures. With those our client’s can choose from a selection of different finishes, in addition to a range of unique blowdries exclusive to the salon, such as:

  • The Face Lift Blow-dry
Mastered by talented Senior Stylist Afroditi Koutsouki, this technique is a small but genius method that gives the appearance of a lifted, contoured face, creating tauter, instantaneous results. Achieved in just under 40 mins, this blow-dry is a game changer for those suffering from tired, softer skin.
  • The Fingertip Blow-dry
Developed by Domenico Casella, this blow-dry is suitable for all hair lengths but not all hair types; Domenico tends to offer this service to clients with limp, thin hair to achieve body and movement while maintaining a natural look, using only his hand and styling products.
  • The 5 Day Blowout
A favourite with clients, this long-lasting service is perfect for those who don’t have time to visit the salon on a regular basis, but need to look their best due to the demands of work and a busy social life.
  • The Perm Blow-dry
This offers all the benefits of a natural perm but without the chemical damage. Achieved using a heated curler, it is easily achieved for a specific event without having to commit long-term.

As well as treatment blowdries such as:

  • The Liquid Gold Smoothing Blow-dry
A protein-based treatment that combines natural ingredients, including the extract from cocoa tree, pure keratin and 24c gold that will guarantee long-lasting revitalisation and rejuvenation of your hair in only 1.5 hours. It restructures and renews your hair with its major component keratin, bringing back the appearance of strong, healthy hair with no long-term damage to your hair.
  • The Keratin Taninoplastia Brazilian Blow-dry
This is a formaldehyde-free straightening treatment that will leave your hair feeling smooth, strong and revitalised.

Meanwhile, Marie Nieuwoudt, Cloud Nine Ambassador, shares how she helps her team to attract more bookings: “At Westrow Salons, we encourage Stylists to have a content creating session, so if you want more blowdries in your Salon, get that content on your socials; get a model, do a great blowout, take beautiful photos and tell people all the key benefits about having a blow-dry. I would also suggest offering before and after work times and work around people's 9-5, to widen your clientele.”

If you’ve already implemented these tactics, Laura suggests: “Another unique option is to offer a blow-dry subscription – a customer pays a fixed fee per month, and they can come for unlimited blow-dries. This is great for extension clients or clients with an active social life. Alternatively, a get-the-look menu combining blow-dries with seasonal or trending styles would be appealing to the younger clientele who are open to experimentation.”

While you're booking your clients in, why not ask them if they understand how seasonal hair shedding can effect their hair?
