Here's what happened at the alternative hair show 2022

Last Sunday 9 October, Alternative Hair Show reached its 40-year milestone with a unique show entitled: Legends, held at the Troxy Theatre in Limehouse, East London. After two years of online, virtual shows, it was great to see the show back ‘live’ on stage, thanks to the wonderful support of the sponsors* and the creative hairdressing teams appearing in the show, raising £104,000.
The Alternative Hair Show is so much more than an annual charity show, it’s about giving and sharing, inspiring and entertaining and importantly, raising funding for a variety of Leukaemia and Blood Cancer charities.
Alternative Hair was born out of passion and love, the original show was created to raise money for Leukaemia Research in memory of Valentino Rizzo, Tony and Maggie Rizzo’s young son, who had sadly lost his life to blood cancer. That core aim and belief remains the same, but as the years have passed, this enduring event focuses on showcasing the artistry of hairdressing teams from every corner of the globe, as well as finding and promoting new talent, because Alternative Hair is not just about raising money, it’s also about raising the status of the hairdresser. The hairdressers showing their work on stage are absolute craftsmen, artists, and visionaries. Beyond that, they are dedicated, and embrace the freedom of creativity afforded them by Alternative Hair.
This year, the show was made up of 14 teams that have supported Tony Rizzo over the years, once again showing the best of their best work. New to the show was The New Visionaries Show, a dedicated section encompassing the creative work of 18 hairdressers who had previously won the Alternative Hair Visionary Awards. (**Names of all teams are listed at the bottom.)
The final three places of the International Visionary Awards were announced during the show, with Tony Rizzo and Alternative Hair Worldwide President, Anthony Mascolo, announcing the winners.

Without the magnificent support of sponsors and hairdressers, the show cannot happen, which is why, each year, Tony reaches out to everyone in the wider hairdressing profession for vital support, so the show can once again return. 40 years is a milestone, but while there are still children who do not survive this awful disease, the work is not done.
