HairTok (the hair realm of TikTok) has recently been awash with one thing - heated rollers. Bouncy blow-drys appear to be high on client wish lists right now, and many are turning to the tried and true styling accessory to achieve the look. It’s likely that this consumer trend will translate into salon styling appointments, so HJ decided to ask Syd Hayes, BaByliss Ambassador, to share his thoughts on the classic curling method which has racked up over 11 million searches online.
Syd explains that while heated rollers are making a resurgence among consumers, they have always been a Session Stylist secret trick. He says: “We’ve seen a rise in ‘glam’ hair - think big and bouncy, Studio 54 vibes - and the best way to create volume and bounce with large curls has to be using heated rollers. BaByliss PRO have been the Queen of the rollers, and you don’t have to look too hard backstage at Fashion Week to find a set.”
Syd notes that heated rollers will always have their place, as they generally create a tighter and smoother curl than their Velcro counterparts, which tend to be a bit fluffy and don’t always hold as well. However, they key to success with either is to let them cool properly.

Having grown up around rollers, originally training at Nicky Clarke, Syd shares: “A secret tip is to always create the neatest sections for heated rollers, and make sure the hair is washed and dried with a volumising product prior to using them.”
An added benefit to heated rollers is that you can leave them in while your client is getting their makeup or nails done – which works well for salons which offer these additional services.
With many videos online focussing on how to use heated rollers, would hairstylists benefit from educating their clients in person? Syd adds: “As hairstylists, we have expertise and are able to do hair much easier than our clients. It’s always great to pass education on as it can help clients achieve a look at home without the use of another pair of hands, in between their appointments.”
