According to a recent Google Trends report, search interest in ‘Mamma Mia hair’ recently spiked by 1,000%. While this is an impressive statistic, it does beg the question: what exactly is ‘Mamma Mia hair’? Here, six stylists share their take on the trend, and discuss how salons and can benefit.
What is ‘Mamma Mia Hair’?
“Obviously, my key inspiration is Amanda Seyfried, from the hit film itself,” says Katherine McEwan from Hair by K Mac. “Summer tends to bring looser and more carefree styles – no one wants to be sat inside with hot tools when it’s beautiful outside. With it being Mamma Mia season (the film takes place on a Greek island in the summer) it only seems right that fashions lean into this cult classic.”
Explaining how this translates to hair trends, Ant O’Brien, from Crown & Aura, tells us: “Think soft and undone beachy waves. Keep it effortless and romantic looking, like you’ve spent the day chilling on a beach or exploring sun bleached ruins. Nothing polished or set looking will cut it. It’s all about a natural texture and movement.”
However, ‘Mamma Mia hair’ isn’t restricted to beachy waves, with Becky Sutherland, OSMO Ambassador and owner of Pink Lemonade Hair explaining: “I immediately think of relaxed styles with a touch of boho chic, like rope braids. This look is all about twisting the hair around itself, creating a natural texture that feels both playful and stylish.”
Why is ‘Mamma Mia Hair’ Trending?
As Katherine noted, one reason these styles are trending is because they enable clients to ditch to hot tools and spend more time outside in the sun. Because of this, these styles are also perfect for the summer months as clients on holiday often have limited access to hair tools. Jonathan Andrew, Fudge Professional Global Ambassador adds: “These styles are great because they’re achievable overnight without heated tools, and offer versatile, day-to-night looks. People appreciate the ease and ability to manipulate their hair in different ways for great results, making the style ideal for transitioning straight from the beach to the bar.”
How Can Salons Benefit from the ‘Mamma Mia Hair’ Trend?
While this trend might not initially appear lucrative for salons, Jonathan explains that these styles are often product-led, which can help to promote sales of styling products and even blonde services. LJ Carter, from Neon Medusa Hair, follows a similar train of thought, explaining: “I think this trend is going to benefit salons and hair stylists so much because it allows us to create a pathway to educate our clients on more heatless styling methods. This is especially great if you have clients concerned about damage, as this can help you gain their trust.”
Meanwhile, with ‘Mamma Mia hair’ trending on social media, Colette Roots suggests taking to platforms like Instagram and TikTok to showcase your work, or even offer at-home styling tips, explaining: “This will show you’re up to date with current trends, which will appeal to potential new clients.” You can check out her example below…
