Hairstyle trends inspired by the 80s

The 80s was a decade of experimentation, excitement and innovation. It was a decade when style icons such as Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and Madonna, created a whole new look that was copied by millions worldwide.

Now, in the late 00s, as recession once again makes its mark on style, fashionistas are taking inspiration from that decade of innovation once again.

Big hair, quiffs and bleached blonde hair were de rigeur 20 years ago and today those looks are popular again. But who is wearing the 80s re-vamp and how have they given the original look a noughties twist?

Mark Leeson from Mark Leeson Hair, Body & Mind, Mansfield, reflects on some of the modern day stylistas:

Messy Updo

1980s: Madonna

Today: Blake Lively

What's changed? In the 80s Madonna's messy updo was created using lots of product and had a scrunch to it. The version that celebs are currently loving is really natural, relaxed and undone.

Hair Accessories

1980s: Bananarama

Today: Mischa Barton
What's changed?  Headbands and scarves have always been fashionable. In the 80s, these were big and flamboyant; whereas today's accessories have been toned down a little. From Grecian to preppy, hair accessories are a hit for the A-list and beyond and they are fast becoming a summer hair essential.

Asymmetric short haircut

1980s: Human League

Today: Rihanna
What's changed?  Two decades ago the style was brushed through to create soft movement and a new romantic feel. Rihanna's version is much smoother, sleeker and flatter, with a sharp modern twist.

Big Bob

1980s: Linda Evans

Today: Lady GaGa
What's changed?  Gone is the 80s-style big set backcombed, that was loaded with hairspray and lacking in movement; today's bob is smooth, sleek and soft with movement.

Scrunch Perm

1980s: Kylie

Today: Giselle
What's changed?  In the 80s the hair was scrunched big, permed and heavily highlighted - a mass of over processed hair. Today we see the look toned down in all areas. It is gently highlighted for a natural look and the scrunched curls are replaced with softer tumbling waves.
