Hairdresser Creates Song About His Salon and the Community Around it

How many hairdressing salons do you know that have had a song published about them? A musical tribute to a salon has been created by retired hairdresser David Palmer, all about the salon he founded in the eighties in his hometown of Southampton.

Earlier this year David retired from a 60-year career in hairdressing. We chatted to David to find out more about his career, his salon Hair at No.TEN on Bargate Street and the song in question.

Why did you create the song?
The song was created to commemorate my career within the hairdressing industry. I retired to care for my late wife, Sara, who sadly passed in November 2022 from cancer. While reflecting over our hairdressing career, one salon that we started in 1982 had a lot of impact. I believe it was because we had a vision, and we were young enough to have the energy to push and promote the business and run it with a great team of people. I believe Hair at No.TEN was an amazing success story and I wanted to create a song to remember that great time.

Watch the video below!

How long have you been in the music industry for?
I'm actually not! My friend is a music producer and he created the song. We have been friends for a few years. He's called Duncan LeFeuvre and over the past nine months with the encouragement, expertise and collaboration of Duncan, (who has encouraged me to to pick up and play my guitar again!) we came up with the song and video.

What does the song talk about?
Hair at No.TEN was actaully my second business – it had so much history in my hometown of Southampton. It was the wacky place to go in the 80's. As the song references it was the most iconic and original hair venue in that area, and it really set the scene for the 80s.
