There's no better way to make a name for yourself in the hair industry than by winning a competition.

Even if you don't win, getting shortlisted or just putting together a shoot for your entry can all be an invaluable experience.

These are some of the most reknowned hair industry competitions that you could try your luck at.

American Crew FACE-OFF

Who can enter?

Any qualified hairdresser.

You must submit two black and white photographs of a male model looking cool and stylish, along with your completed application form.

The prize

Three winners will get an all-expenses paid trip to do a photo shoot in either Los Angeles or New York for a men's magazine.

Goldwell - The Color Zoom Challenge

Who can enter?

Any qualified hairdresser over the age of 18.

More details

Color Zoom is a photographic and colour competition. Send in your interpretation of Goldwell's 'Just Naked' trend highlighting the techniques, colours and your inspiration. If you win you'll need to recreate the look at the live International Final in Paris.

The prize

To become a UK winner and compete in the global final in Paris to become a member of the Color Zoom Creative Team 2011.

La Biosthetique International Beauty Stylist Awards

Who can enter?

La Biosthetique salons from around the world.

A photographic entry should be a La Biosthetique trend-inspired cut, colour and style.

The prize

The winners will go to Berlin in July 2010 to participate in a workshop and international photo shoot with Sally Brooks of Brooks & Brooks, London. The awards ceremony will take place in Paris in November 2010 at the La Biosthetique headquarters.

L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy

Who can enter?

Teams and individuals who are qualified colourists and stylists working in a salon. Entrants for the Young Colourist Award, in association with HJ, should be under the age of 25.

There are four awards to enter in this photographic competition - the L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy, the L'Oréal Professionnel Men's Image Award, the Young Colourist Award, held in association with HJ, and the Mizani Afro Catwalk Award. Competitors are required to create a look inspired by one of the catwalk trends for autumn/winter 2010 with finalists recreating the look on a model at the live regional finals.

The prize

Dependent on the category the prize includes a photo shoot, trade coverage, local press exposure, training opportunities and consultancy to maximise managing your salon.

Matrix Destination Fame

Who can enter?

Any qualified hairdresser.

More details

Create a look that is on-trend and incorporates Matrix colour. Take a headshot and lifestyle (full length) shot with a camera or mobile phone and send by post or email describing in no more than 50 words why the look is on-trend and which colours were used. 

The prize

A three-day photo shoot creating the Matrix calendar for the following year, mentored by members of the Matrix artistic team. Also, an opportunity to gain local press coverage and attend the Matrix Live tour 2010.

Paul Mitchell - The Color Challenge

Who can enter?

Any Paul Mitchell salon stylist.

Passion, creativity and enthusiasm should be combined to produce fashion-forward colour, cuts and styles on a mannequin head. The final will be held in tandem with The Paul Mitchell European The Gathering in Birmingham.

The prize

The first prize is a trip to The Gathering in Las Vegas in 2011.

Redken NYC Hair Awards

Who can enter?

It is a salon team entry, consisting of a maximium of four people - stylist, colourist, model and make-up artist. There are three categories which the salon team can enter - Color Genius, Male Expert and Style Innovator.

The theme for 2010 is autumn/winter 2010 trends as seen on the runways of New York and London. A mood board of your inspiration is also required as well as photographs and research of fashion trends.

The prize

It's different for each category but some prizes include two tickets to attend the 2011 Redken Symposium in Las Vegas, a personalised development programme, a tailor-made PR programme, tickets to Exchange Experience 2011. Also, a course at the New York Redken exchange on 5th Avenue on your chosen discipline.

Wella Professionals Trend Vision Award 2010

Who can enter?

There are two categories Young Talent and Color Category. Young Talent entrants must be under the age of 30 while the Color Category is open to all qualified hairdressers.

More details

Competitors can attend a Trend Vision Award Insight Seminar which take place around the UK in February to learn about the four new trends before creating their own photographic interpretation of one of the trends.

The prize 

The winner of the UK Final will represent the UK at the International Final later in the year. They will also receive opportunities to promote their win in the industry and to their clients.
