Hair industry competitions and awards are the ideal way to take your career to the next level in 2014. How do I enter? Send in an image – this does not have to be exclusive to the competition. There is a small fee for entry, which goes to Fighting Leukaemia, the charity started by the Alternative Hair organisation. What is the prize? 25 finalists are chosen from all of the international entries. Each is invited to present a model at the Alternative Hair Show at The Royal Albert Hall in London. The winner is then invited to present their own section at the following year’s show. Where can I get more information? Submit a photo reflecting your hair and beauty predictions for Autumn/Winter 2014. What is the prize? An opportunity to work backstage at New York Fashion Week with the Aveda team. Self-employed hairdressers, beauty therapists and make-up artists in the UK. There are seven categories in total, covering everything from colour to prom hair. How do I enter? Fancy photographs aren’t required; just ‘snap and send’ a good quality 10 x 8 photo with a brief description of techniques and inspiration. What is the prize? A trophy. Send in your photographic interpretation of the Reallusion trend with an entry form. You’ll find the full briefing kit online but pictures don’t have to be professional, just clear and good quality. Finalists will have to recreate their image, before three national winners are announced (bronze, silver and gold) in three categories – Global Creative Colorist, Global New Talent Colorist and Global Partner Colorist. What is the prize? The UK winners will travel to the international final in Berlin and the overall winner will join the Color Zoom international creative team and help create the collection for 2015. Current NVQ Level 2 and Level 3 students who have less than five years of hairdressing experience. How do I enter? Submit four photographs of your model – Level 2 students have the brief of creating a red carpet style; Level 3 should cut and blow-dry an innovative style of their choice. Eight finalists in each category will be invited to the final at Salon International where they will be asked to recreate their look. What is the prize? Winners will become ambassadors for the Hairdressing Council for a year and enjoy opportunities including education and inspiration days with leading hairdressers. Where can I get more information? It doesn’t have to be a professional photo and can be in colour or black and white. A panel of expert judges will choose a shortlist of finalists, who will be invited to recreate their look live at Salon International. What is the prize? A trophy and a prestigious title. Qualified hairdressers who have been working in the UK for a minimum of three years with the exception of HJ’s Newcomer of the Year, where entrants should be aged 25 years and under, with a regular column in the salon. How do I enter? British hairdressing’s biggest night has 15 categories – nine regional and six specialist. To enter your chosen category, submit four photographs created in the last 12 months which depict current trends in a creative and inspirational way. How do I enter? Submit a photo showcasing the best of your cut, colour, styling and make-up skills. What is the prize? The chance to attend an exclusive workshop and professional photoshoot with Alex Dinter, international creative director for La Biosthetique. Where can I get more information? Call 0129 6611371 or visit www.biosthetique.co.uk L’Oréal Colour Trophy Who can enter? Any salon in the country. How do I enter? Send in a photograph of a colour look which is no more than a year old and which fits the brief of ‘hair inspired by fashion’. A successful entry will gain you a place in one of the seven regional finals across the country where you will need to present your model in front of a panel of judges. If your look has what it takes to be a winner, you will be announced as a grand finalist at the end of the regional final. You will then recreate your look in June at the 58th annual Grand Final in London. What is the prize? There are four award categories with a variety of prizes; the main prize winners will receive a year filled with amazing creative and business opportunities including education, a glossy shoot in Elle magazine and lunch with your hairdressing idol – all on top of profile-building PR. There are no rules about your entry, it just needs to fulfil the criteria of ‘bang on trend’. Neither your image or model have to be professional; just take a before and after shot and submit to www.destinationfame.co.uk. Finalists are chosen by a combination of industry experts and online votes before a live final in London where you will have to recreate your look and present the moodboard and inspiration behind it. What is the prize? Three Grand Prize winners will win a Year of Fame with Matrix with an exciting programme of events including a photoshoot mentored by the global artistic team. You’ll also enjoy PR and marketing support to help you shout about your win and will have the opportunity to get involved in Matrix events and presentations. Where can I get more information? Details will be posted on the Matrix Facebook page this month, but will involve a combination of digital auditions and live presentations to find new creative talent resulting in an exciting year-long calendar of events. The Matrix House of Talent team will work for a year alongside like-minded people, including former FAME team member Ashleigh Hodges of Flame Hair Studios who is leading the programme in its inaugural year. How do I enter? Create a commercial cut and colour and submit a picture. These will be entered into an inter-college photographic competition, with the top five entries then competing in the national photographic heat. The best 80 students are then invited to recreate their looks in regional heats, with the top 20 battling it out at the national final. What is the prize? There are bronze, silver and gold awards – prizes include vouchers for education, tool kits and the chance to shadow a top hairdresser for the day. Submit a photo of a look inspired by either of the two trends for 2014; Urban Native or Borderline Beauty – don’t miss the Insight events hosted by HOB Academy and Cheynes across the country to inspire your entry. Finalists will be invited to regional heats, before the UK and Ireland final in London with winners then invited to the international final. What is the prize? There are two categories; Young Talent for stylists aged 30 and under and Color, which is open to qualified hairdressers of any age. Prizes for both include major PR opportunities, the chance to work with and be mentored by some of the leading names in the industry, a personalised training programme and involvement in Wella Professionals shows and exhibitions.
