There's no better way to make a name for yourself in the hairdressing industry than to enter one of the many competitions, awards or events.


Even if you're not lucky enough to win, the publicity surrounding these events ensure that your name will be promoted throughout the industry, and your work will be seen by some of the biggest names in the business - and could even be published in magazines like HJ.


Here are all the details for the main hairdressing competitions being held in 2013. Keep checking back on the HJi website for all the up-to-the-minute information!


American Crew Face Off
Who can enter? The competition is open to all professional stylists in the UK - you don't have to be an American Crew stockist to enter.
What are the details? American Crew Face Off is a global men's styling competition which recognises the best men's hairdressers in the UK though a black and white photographic competition.
What is the prize? Twenty finalists are chosen, from which an overall UK winner is selected to fly to Los Angeles and compete for the title of American Crew Face Off global champion. 
In LA, he or she will style a photo shoot with the American Crew artistic team and compete for the title against winners from other participating countries (which include Australia and the USA). There are also runner-up prizes for the second, third and fourth places which include photo shoots and free beer for a year from sponsor, Asahi.

HJ's British Hairdressing Awards, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional 
Who can enter? All qualified hairdressers who have been working in the UK for a minimum of three years; with the exception of HJ's Newcomer of the Year, where entrants should be aged 25 years and under, with a regular column in the salon.
What are the details? For initial entry, submit four photographs created in the last 12 months which depict current trends in a creative and inspirational way. Specific requirements for each category vary, visit www.hji.co.uk for more details.
What is the prize? A trophy, PR support and a prestigious title from the 'Oscars' of the hairdressing industry.

Wella Professionals Trend Vision Award
Who can enter? There are two categories; Young Talent for stylists aged 30 and under, and Color which is open to qualified hairdressers of any age.
What are the details? The first stage of the competition is to submit a photographic entry with your interpretation of one of the four 2013 Trend Vision Trends. Judges are looking for your own personal interpretation of your chosen Trend not a copy of it, so get creative and put your own personal twist on it.
What is the prize? Major PR opportunities, the chance to work with and be mentored by some of the leading names in the industry, personalised training programme worth £2,000, involvement in Wella Professionals shows and exhibitions, exclusive preview of Trend Vision 2014 and the chance to be part of the International Trend Vision Award in Frankfurt.

HJ's British Hairdressing Business Awards
Who can enter? All UK salons and hairdressers can enter the various categories, which include Junior of the Year, Salon Design and Customer Care. Each category has its own entry requirements - see www.hji.co.uk for more information.
What are the details? These awards recognise that there is more to hairdressing than creative skills. Detailed written portfolios are submitted with testimonials and evidence of claims. Finalists in some categories will then be interviewed.
What is the prize? A trophy, a prestigious title and dedicated PR support.

L'Oréal Colour Trophy
Who can enter? Any salon in the country.
What are the details? Now in its 58th year, the L'Oréal Colour Trophy continues to discover and develop the hairdressing stars of the future. Each competitor is challenged to merge their knowledge of catwalk trends with their technical skills to produce an overall look that represents 'Hair Inspired by Fashion'. To be in with a chance of winning, submit a fashion-led photographic entry - this could take you to one of the seven regional finals where you will be required to bring your look to life on the runway. 
What is the prize? The winning salon will receive a bespoke package of unique opportunities designed to further their creative 
career and benefit their business including photo shoots, educational packages, mentoring sessions with some of the most accomplished and highly acclaimed hairdressers in the industry and PR exposure.

Matrix Destination Fame
Who can enter? Any hairdresser in the UK and Ireland, with any level of experience.
What are the details? There are no rules - just great hair. Entrants are challenged to create an on-trend look using Matrix colours and styling projects but no glossy shot is needed and no professional model is required.
What is the prize? A year of fame with Matrix - including a big budget photo shoot where winners will be mentored by some of the country's best hairdressers, PR and marketing support and session and education opportunities.

Goldwell Color Zoom Challenge
Who can enter? All professional colourists. The New Talent Category is for those who have been hairdressing for less than five years, the Creative Colourist Category is for those who have been hairdressing for more than five years and the Partner Category is for hairdressers who work with Goldwell as an educator, ambassador or freelancer.
What are the details? The competition opens in March and ­entrants are challenged to interpret the new Color Zoom 2013 trend; Beautify. Simply create your look, take a picture (it doesn 't have to be professional - just clear and good quality) and send it in with your entry pack.
What is the prize? If you become a UK winner you will travel to the Global Event in LA to compete in the Global Finale this October. If you win at the Global Finale you'll become part of the Color Zoom international creative team for a year and work on the collection for 2015. Plus you can expect a year of high profile PR opportunities!

La Biosthetique Beauty Stylist Awards
Who can enter? La Biosthetique salons
What are the details? This international competition sees competitors from across the globe compete in both Cut and Colour categories. Entrants must first submit a photographic entry which will be judged by a panel of trade press and respected hairdressers. Finalists will then have to present a live model in the second round, with the UK winners then invited to attend an international final in Paris.
What is the prize? Trip to Paris, photo shoot, and more.

Freelance Hair & Beauty Federation Awards Freelancer of the Year
Who can enter? Any self-employed hairdresser, beauty therapist or make-up artist in the UK.
What are the details? Simply snap a look that you're proud of and send it in - no expensive photo shoots are required, images are judged on content alone. Categories cover Hair Colourist, Ladies Stylist, Men's Hairdresser, Make-up Artist, Bridal Service, Avant-Garde Stylist, Business and Retailer - rules vary for each category, so check the form for more information.

Hairdressing Council UK Student of the Year Awards
Who can enter? Colleges, training centres and salons can nominate any of their learners for the awards.
What are the details? Submit four pictures of one model, which will be judged by Patrick Cameron, Andrew Barton and Lisa Shepherd. Level 3 learners should enter an innovative cut and blow-dry and level 2 should submit a red carpet look. The finals will then be held in London with the winners announced at Salon International.
What is the prize? A day shadowing Andrew Barton, vouchers for education, work with the Habia Skills Academy, a trip to the House of Commons and a winner's trophy.

Wella Exposure
Who can enter? Student hairdressers at colleges and learning providers across the country.
What are the details? Students must create a commercial cut and colour, with finalists initially chosen in an inter-college photographic competition. The top five entries at each college will be put through to a national photographic heat, with the best 80 students then invited to recreate their looks in four regional heats. The top 20 then battle it out at a national final in London.
What is the prize? There are prizes for first, second and third place which include a trophy, tool kit, a day shadowing a top hairdresser and training vouchers. This year there will also be prizes for three winning models, three training colleges and three lecturers.
