How to Care for Your Hair Extensions: Advice from an Expert

Published 08th May 2024 by Michelle Duffield

With hair extensions set to be the biggest trend this spring, founder of Spectrum One Hair, Katy Grimshaw, has shared her five non-negotiables regarding aftercare following the appointment, helping your clients care for their extensions at home with ease.

Invest in Quality Hair Care Products

The last thing you want to do is damage hair and extensions during your hair wash routine. Katy recommends looking for moisture-based products such as Alterna Caviar Moisture Shampoo, Nine Yards Moisture Duo or INNOluxe #SAVED Shampoo and Conditioner, and avoiding anything with too much protein, which may overload the hair – more on this here.

Heavy On the Oiling

Katy advises that the golden number for how many times you should apply oil to your hair extensions is three: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Her favourite oil is O&M Frizzy Logic Shine Serum, and she recommends being liberal with it to keep that new hair in good shape and super hydrated.

Avoid Wet Hair

Never go to bed with wet hair or leave your hair wet for too long after washing, as this is when your hair and extensions are at their heaviest and most vulnerable to damage. By blow-drying promptly on a medium to low heat, you’re avoiding any damage caused to the hair when it’s in a vulnerable state as well as any pulling and tugging due to the excess weight of the extensions.

Reach For Hair Masks Weekly

Scheduling in hair mask time weekly is a must for hair extensions. Katy recommends professional quality options to make sure you’re getting the most out of your products and your ‘self-care time’. She loves the O&M Seven Day Miracle Masque for this.

Always Protect Your Hair From Heat

Heat is the number one source of damage for your hair generally, but definitely for your hair extensions. Not only does it cause your hair to dry out, but it also causes your colour to fade. If your stylist has curated a colour match and blend between your natural hair and extensions, colour fade is going to knock that out of balance. Katy’s recommended product to keep heat at bay is Nine Yards Easy Life Heat Protector, this one is particularly good for your hair extensions.
