This year, red carpet events like the Oscars and the Met Gala were pivotal in the trend-trajectory of hair bows. Influential names like Florence Pugh and Sydney Sweeney wore ribbons of various grandeurs, either to garnish an updo or dominate the entire hairstyle. And with their popularity across runway shows like Versace and Vivetta, their status as a mainstay accessory for AW23 was confirmed.
In light of this, HJ spoke to a couple of industry experts to find out the best styles to pair with a hair bow, and the fate that awaits this hot trend.
How The Professionals Are Doing It
As hair bows became increasingly popular, hairstylists were encouraged to become experimental in their use, transforming them from simple accessories to expressions of personal style. Compare Danielle Priano's elegant bow-styling for Vanessa Hudgens with Serge Normant's avant-garde mega-bow for Sarah Jessica Parker, for example.
Waltzing through the streets of NYC, making way to the annual fall fashion gala at the New York City Ballet, SJP paired her black tulle Carolina Herrera dress with an XXL hair bow. Positioned at the crown of her head, the accessory was visible from every angle with trailing ends that dangled to the hem of her dress - (trust Carrie Bradshaw to take a trend and amp it up a notch). “The bow adds a sense of drama to the look. It’s really eye-catching and over the top, but also brings an unexpected softness and youth – as you’d typically see one in a child’s hair,” says Becky Hare, Brooks & Brooks London.
"Bows are a really wearable trend and can elevant any hairstyle or outfit for that matter. I think this is a great opportunity for clients to try a new hair accessory as we enter a new season," adds Anna Stubbs, hair tutorials content creator.
SJP’s hairstylist, Serge, made use of a sleek half-up style as the foundation for this look, attaching the ribbon to the ponytail. As Becky puts it: “Ribbons elevate hair that is elevated. The top of the ribbon sits strong at the base of the pony and the rest of the ribbon flows freely into the hair.” Plus, having the hair pulled away from the face helps to structure and define the face – perfect for those red carpet snaps.
The Future of This Trend? Bright
And not just for the season ahead. Sure, dress up your client's seasonal updo with a red or sparkly ribbon, or follow in Serge's footsteps for dramatic impact, but don't ditch this trend too soon. “They can be changed seasonally, like a red ribbon for Christmas, or a big pastel coloured ribbon during summer," says Becky.
