Goal setting - the michael van clarke approach Apprentices at Michael Van Clarke Academy take part in competitionOur official Build a Business mentor Michael Van Clarke has an incredible reputation for nurturing team members from the day they begin as an assistant, ensuring they can enjoy a long and successful career with his award-winning salon. Here he talks about the importance of goal setting for team members. What do you take into account when setting goals for your staff? Their goals need to be aligned to business objectives but it's important that they are not simply imposed. Each person needs to be committed to their targets and emotionally aligned to them in order to be motivated. How do you involve team members in setting their own goals? We have them prepare a vision board for what they want out of life and business over the next 3-5 years. Into this we can weave the structure of what they need to do (the behaviours and actions) and who they need to become to enjoy that vision of life they have in mind. What strategy do you then take going forward? From that big picture we can break down the smaller targets and actions related to their work life on a daily basis. Within the salon, regular reviews and coaching help them along that path of self-development.”
