Getting the balance right

Work/life balance - I wonder how many people actually feel that they have got it right? Or in many instances in this industry, are actually able to differentiate between the two. Hairdressing is a sociable industry where the line between work and leisure is most definitely blurred as colleagues become friends and industry events are often as much about the networking as they are about what is actually happening on stage. With individuals willing to share ideas and inspiration readily; and manufacturers, suppliers and associations organising events that fill the calendar offering education, competitions and a chance to network - it has to be down to the individual to decide if their work/life balance is working for them.

For me, if you enjoy what you do and like the company of those you are working with - either directly or indirectly - the balance is more about having the time to juggle commitments rather than deciding how you split your time; and then prioritising accordingly. Hairdressers are often balancing clients, business management, team development and marketing functions alongside their personal life and in an all-consuming career, are reliant on partners to either share or, at least, understand their passion for the craft.

And talking about passion for the craft, the much-loved Errol Douglas will take the reigns as president of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing at President's Night on Monday, 22nd April - huge congratulations from us all.
