Five ways to improve in-salon training with suzie mcgill Five Ways to Improve In-Salon Training with Suzie McGillFormer Scottish Hairdresser of the Year Suzie McGill is a multi talented hairdresser and businesswoman. From winning the prestigious title at the British Hairdressing Awards to session styling across the globe, Suzie's role as a Schwarzkopf Ambassador sees her travel through the UK and Europe presenting shows and seminars. She also finds the time to run her busy Scottish salon and is a leading member of the Artistic Team within Rainbow Room International. With such a wealth of experience, it's no wonder that Suzie's students look to her for training and guidance - here she shares some of her expert advice to ensure your in-salon training is the best it can be.   1. Teach the basic skills "Hair trends and styles are constantly evolving on the catwalk, meaning hairdressers have to constantly learn new techniques and styles. However training students thoroughly in the basics gives them the chance to gain new experience and gives them the confidence to tackle any hairstyle, hair type or colour given to them. Giving demonstrations and hands-on workshop sessions in the salon can be a great confidence booster for assistants." 2. Ensure a great work environment The Rainbow Room International Uddingston salon allows Suzie’s students to work efficiently within fantastic surroundings, giving them a real flair for the real hairdressing world. "In the Rainbow Room International culture you quickly realize it is all about training as well as having fun – everyone is motivated and I keep it exciting, fresh and modern for her students. It's important to me that students enjoy being at work and have a real passion for what they do." 3. Build up relationships "Personal presentation and characteristic skills are key attributes within the Uddingston salon and are very important to me. It is crucial to create excellent relationships with clients to build up your column, especially when you are just starting out. Not only are client relationships important but also those with work colleagues. This makes Rainbow Room International staff work great together as a team." 4. Celebrate personal achievement "Within Rainbow Room International, personal achievement comes from passing modules. This makes everyone understand the importance of passing each module and gives them a great belief to continue to learn more about hair." 5. Have fun "Last but not least, the best tip I can offer to my students would be to have as much fun as possible. Not only does this make assistants’ happier but I also feel it helps push them creatively and break boundaries when it comes to hair. As they are having fun and are passionate in what they do, they are more likely to take risks."
