Are you looking for one key piece of furniture this year? HJi looks at a selection of essential items for the salon, with tips from the experts

The backwash zone is one of the most popular areas of the salon, with every client visiting this space.

Gone are the days when clients dreaded having their hair washed; nowadays, having a treatment and massage is all part of the backwash experience, with some clients spending more than 30 minutes at the basin.

However, while client comfort is essential, it is also of paramount importance for the hairdresser.

Wendy Droznika, director of LSE Hair & Beauty, offers these top tips when choosing a backwash unit

1. Look for an ergonomically designed basin on the backwash. It offers comfort to the customer and is easier and more effective for the shampooist.

2. The best backwash units offer non-drip showerheads, which resolve the problem of water dripping onto the floor.

3. Check if the backwash has an energy-efficient option of a pre-set thermostatic control, ensuring the temperature remains constant.

4. There is no doubt that backwash units with raising legrests and massage have become extremely popular. Look for either manual or electric legrests and check out the different types of massage available, for example shiatsu or air massage.

5. Ensure the backwash has an anti-rust stainless steel frame.

6. Try before you buy: always visit showrooms to see and try the backwash unit as a client and as a shampooist.

Once you've chosen the best backwash for your salon, make sure the rest of furniture and fittings are up to scratch with our following advice...
