Expert advice: offering bridal hair services in your salon

Want to offer a bridal service but don't know where to start? Here's some advice from those in the know.

"The most important considerations for bridal work with extensions for updo's is consultation, colour match and trial. Don't take the bride too far away from her natural style. Analyse her body, face size and shape and ask to see the gown - everything has to be taken into consideration.

"When colour matching, use length and ends, not root - don't overpower the style with numerous pieces. If the bride has chosen permanent extensions ensure the application is made six to eight weeks before the day so she can get used to added hair and weight. Clip-in hair pieces are fantastic to create natural updo's and can then be taken on the honeymoon for instant glamour."

I want to let local brides know about the service we have on offer and ensure their day goes without a hitch - what tips can you give me?

"Our bridal team is regularly used by bridal magazines for editorial work, and bridal and fashion designers at their shows. The team has been the official catwalk hairdresser for the Designer Wedding Show for the last six years. These avenues along with word-of-mouth recommendations from past brides/bridesmaids introduce the team to new brides-to-be.

"From the first enquiry to the actual wedding day, the bridal team is dedicated to the bride and her family; each bride is matched to a stylist, and where needed the team has been known to advise on flowers and table settings, liaise with the dress designer and offer input on the choice of outfit for the mother of the bride.

"We have a dedicated London black taxi with a driver who takes the team to the weddings, ensuring the team arrives relaxed and ready for the day ahead. We prepare a bespoke timeline planner which ensures the bride's hair is in tip top condition, and the desired colour and length for her big day."

More and more clients are getting married but putting their long hair up scares me - help!

"Brides are an important part of any salon business, and if you're fully prepared it should be fun. There are plenty of tools on the market to help increase your knowledge and expertise in providing a respectable bridal service.

"Over the years, I have launched educational DVDs and books that take you through easy-to-follow step by steps for key hair updo trends that can be transferred into bridal looks. Once you have mastered hair-up, make sure your team is confident too. Even if you only have one or two long hair experts in the salon, it is important that the entire team knows about the service and can talk passionately about it."
