What do you enjoy most about cutting men's hair?

I love the fact that men are more adventurous now. Gone are the days of whipping out a razor and shaving off the lot. Men are happy to go for real styles and they'll experiment with products too.

Desmond-Murray8.jpgWhat was the inspiration behind the collection which won you the title HJ's 2009 Men's Hairdresser of the Year?

I took on board the revival of the 80s and gave it a modern, edgy twist. I also created some quirky photographic images. I do all the art direction and photography as well as the hair, so I'm able to keep going until I achieve exactly what I want.

What are the major challenges in getting creative with men's hair?

Desmond-Murray5.jpgAlthough men are willing to experiment, they still aren't as easy to convince as women when it comes to creating something new and original.

What's the secret to a great men's haircut?

Spending time on it. Working on a men's hairline is very important before deciding on the style. You have to be aware of receding hairlines and cows licks, which often appear at the sides or back of the head. Even when hair is short, technique is vital. Most men don't want to spend time on their hair, so making styles low-maintenance is also important.

Desmond-Murray4.jpgWhat will be the main trends in men's hair in spring/summer 2010?

Several trends are carrying through from the end of last year - really short sides with longer layers on top. Colour is evolving too, whether its slices or comb-through versions, men are opting for tone change.

Who will be the men's style icons of 2010?

For the over 30s, David Beckham and Daniel Craig always keep one step ahead for men and their more macho images make them a popular choice for male clients. Robert Pattinson (the star of Twilight and New Moon) is a great inspiration for younger men. Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys leads the way in terms of longer hair.
