After weeks of deliberation and three rounds of judging, Denman’s College Star for 2025 has been announced. Mollie Dwyer of Wigan & Leigh College has won the prize of £1000 cash and a hamper of tools worth £200 for her college department. Mollie created a gorgeous glossy and perfectly balanced loose wave blow-dry for her model, taking the top spot in the second year of the College Star - Denman Big Blowout Competition and beating over 650 other entrants to take the prize.
Discussing the win, Mollie said: “I think the competition is a good way for young students to show their skills and ability. I was very shocked to win the title but at the same time very proud of myself.”

Mollie’s own tutor, Victoria Mawson, Hairdressing Lecturer from Wigan and Leigh College, was also gifted a £250 cash prize – because Denman respects the pivotal role course lecturers play in motivating students to get involved in competitions. Victoria said: “Encouraging students to enter competitions such as the Denman Big Blowout Competition improves confidence in their skills and importantly, they all enjoy doing it, too.”
Denman CEO Kevin McNamee said: “The volume of incredible entries we received shows just how committed and creative our future hair professionals are. We are so grateful to all of the tutors that have encouraged their students to enter and are so impressed with the quality of entries we received. Blow-dry skills are one of the key skills to master and this competition shows that hairdressing students all over the UK are determined to do just that.”
This year the competition prizes extended to the tutors; Victoria Mawson, tutor of the new Denman College Star winner received £250, while Julie Carroll of Belfast Met College won £250 for the greatest number of student entries.
College Star - Denman’s Big Blowout Competition will be back on Monday 16 February 2026. Students can sign-up to be notified here.
