Day in the life: jemma stafford, salon junior
Every morning I catch the bus and travel straight to the doorstep of the salon I work in - The Fantastic Hairdresser in Chiswick, West London.
Once I'm in work I get the salon set up and ready for the stylists. This includes making sure the ambience of the treatment room is perfect, the salon is completely clean and, if there is a seminar running at the academy, checking that everything there is as it should be. As a salon we are highly customer service-orientated so it's important to create a friendly, positive environment for clients.
Keeping on top of salon needs and requirements is key to my role, and of course assisting the stylists as much as possible to ensure everything runs smoothly. When occasionally there is a quiet period, it's nice to get the dolly heads out and have a little playtime with them just to keep the creative juices flowing.
We have slightly irregular hours at the salon, so sometimes I will finish work at 6.30pm, sometimes I will finish at 3.30pm or 9.30pm - it depends entirely on the day of the week and which of our shift rotas I am on.
When I get home I like to check out the latest hair news online and keep up to date with any new trends, using tools such as Twitter and Facebook. I also spend a lot of my evenings attending Fellowship Events through Clubstar, which I absolutely adore, as well as investing time in portfolio shoots.
In my opinion, hairdressing is the best industry in the world. We create beauty, we make people happy, we enjoy our work, and of course, we know how to party - nothing else comes close!
