Sixty per cent of the world's population has curly hair, according to research from Sphere Trending.

And, while those with straight hair may envy their curly counterparts, those with naturally curly hair often yearn for frizz-free manes.

But do they know how to look after them - and you do know how to cut and style them?

alexa-chung.jpgDarren Bain from HOB Salons is HJ's current London Hairdresser of the Year and says this season's curls are loose, natural and deconstructured for a romantic, whimsical feel to complement the soft, feminine pastel tones prevalent in fashion.

"For those with naturally wavy hair, it's simply about working with the hair's natural movement for an effortless vibe, as seen on the likes of Alexa Chung.

"For those clients that have straighter hair, but want to achieve a curly result, avoid contrived curls. Rather than using tongs or rollers, opt for a conical wand to create a more natural curl, working with large, irregular sections."

While styling technique and the right product is important for naturally curly hair, the right haircut is essential.

"The key is to make sure you don't cut curly hair the same way as straight hair," Darren advises. sarah-jessica-parker.jpg

"With curly hair, it's all about working with the interior of the hair to create shape with width and graduation. Twist-cutting is a technique I use on curly hair for a haphazard, less structured feel.

"Take small sections of hair, twist the hair and then cut it from mid-lengths to ends two to three times. This creates a silhouette on curly hair."

As long as your client has a great cut, styling should be simple for them. Using a diffuser will help to enhance the cut as will a quality mousse and a serum to replace moisture for a healthy finish.
