Creating a successful business with darren ambrose Darren AmbroseHJ’s reigning British Hairdresser of the Year is famous for his creative brilliance, but Darren Ambrose also has a successful salon business in Greater London. HJ found out how he uses his creative prowess to boost his business. How has being a finalist - and then winning - awards helped you and your business? I’ve definitely seen an increase in interest across the board, including a growth in clientele, not just for me but also the team, so there’s been a growth in revenue since winning the award. As a kid I had a great admiration and respect for all the British winners and nominees,  watching them fly the flag and grow their business. Now, having achieved it myself, I can see the benefit such an award can give you. Positive growth, recognition, and a good PR make it a vehicle to help streamline your business. I have new clients all the time telling me they looked online to find a new hairdresser and saw I was British hairdresser of the Year, so they booked. Darren top tips on being successful in hairdressing
  1. Keep very focused on your direction and goals. Never blame others, it’s always your own decisions or misunderstandings that take you places so stand by them, own them and learn from them.
  2. Be true to yourself and don’t be side-tracked by the competition; find your signature and run with it always growing on strength.
  3. Learn from your failures. I didn’t get through the first time I entered the British Hairdressing Awards, but it’s never a negative - you re-gather your thoughts and reasons, take the positive learning experience and create something better next time. We can be very self-critical as creatives so be positive and strive to better the next collection, show, or seminar.
