Costume institute gala 2011: on-trend choices hot from the catwalks

While most red carpet events require guests to look glamorous, groomed and gorgeous, the Costume Institute Gala allows its attendees to really show off their fashion credentials with on-trend looks inspired by the catwalks - here are some of our favourite fashion-forward looks with commentary from Gary Hooker and Michael Young, and Warren Holmes at Nicky Clarke.

Plaits are an easy trend to transition from the runway to the red carpet and as our recent feature proved, there's an enormous array of ways to wear the look.

Both Rihanna and Amy Adams opted for braided styles at the gala, but with brilliantly different results. Rihanna's rocking red style had a hint of the Rapunzel, while Amy's classic updo feels perfect for summer brides.

Warren says: "Rihanna's hairline side braid will undoubtedly be one of the stand-out looks of Summer 2011 and she had the most interesting hair of the night. It's really simple to achieve for the woman at home too, it's the idea that is key."

"There are two key elements to Amy's style working; the positioning of the parting, placed deep at the side gives an air of decadence to almost contradict the fun of the braid. Secondly the plait has been pulled a part to increase in density, with great care, from the parting to the back to add another point of interest that is different and a little cheeky."

Also keeping it on-trend, both Eva Mendes and Glee star Dianna Agron opted for another summer staple; the ponytail. While Eva keeps things romantic with texture and movement, Dianna's look is more directional with a super-straight, super-blonde piece.

Warren says: "Eva's low simple ponytail was made to look more elegant and decadent with height at the crown and separation at the front to create a more 60's feel."

"Dianna's ponytail was the one look on the Red Carpet that was most Spring Summer 2011 led. A low ponytail with a page boy parting, sleeked down that relects light. It worked well and is on-trend."

A full fringe makes a firm fashion statement, so it's no surprise that stylish celebrites including Naomi Campbell and Florence Welch opted for the blunt look - Naomi pairing hers with an intricate updo and Flo sticking to her usual contrasting copper waves.

Warren says: " his is a wig and hair pieces that have been made and gripped in. It resembles the shape of a flower, to co-ordinate with the dress."

"Florence stuck to her trademark look, pairing a heavy blunt fringe with movement on the lengths and ends."

Super-cool girls know that texture is where it's at, so it was no surprise to see both Alexa Chung and Chloe Sevigny rocking fluffy, matte-finish styles.

Gary and Michael say: "We're a big fan of Alexa's individual style, however we feel this is a step in the wrong direction and looks a little frumpy. Still loving the fluffy texture but it's a bit too turned under at the ends."

Warren says: "Chloe's hair was similar to Alexa's; dishevelled, seamless and almost as though she has got out of bed and rushed to the ball. It accompanied her Alexander McQueen gown nicely."

Contrasting against the textured look, both Liv Tyler and Lea Michele opted for a super polished look, styled simply. Inspired by Kate Middleton's impossibly glossy, perfectly healthy locks, these stars let their style speak for itself.

Gary and Michael say: "Beautifully elegant look, glossy perfect hair, keeping it simple. Both Lea and Liv are keeping classic red carpet glamour cool."
