Michela Bazzoli and Charley Henerey from TONI&GUY, British Colour Technicians of the Year 2024, share their favourite creations...

What do you love most about being a colourist?
Hair is the ultimate accessory we wear every day, and as colourists we have the privilege of enhancing it to help boost our clients' confidence.

What is the most important question you ask in a colour consultation?
It's essential to select a colour technique that aligns with their lifestyle and desired level of maintenance.

What colour trends are you pleased to see out of fashion?
Grey/ash tones – it's not a shade that is suitable to everyone. A cleaner, brighter blonde is more adaptable to suit individual skin tones.

Are there any colour trends you’d like to bring back?
A fresh take on the dip-dye trend – with the right colour choices, it can be edgy, playful, yet sophisticated. Our tip: keep the contrast to no more than two levels of depth to maintain a soft, seamless finish.

What are the challenges facing colourists right now?
With the rise of TikTok, many clients are eager to experiment with colour at home. While we encourage creativity, it often presents challenges for us as professionals, limiting colour options and techniques, and potentially compromising the health of the hair.

What do you think will be the next big colour trend?
Hidden pockets of varying tonalities, allowing clients the flexibility to reveal or conceal their colour depending on their mood or styling preference.

What colour techniques are you known for?
Our variety of work – we love the level of detail within precisions, the beautiful blend created in a balayage and the freedom of colour in creative work.

What colour creation makes you most proud?
Our British Hairdressing Awards British Colour Technician of the Year winning collection is the creation we’re most proud of – from conception to creation, it's been an incredibly rewarding, ‘pinch-me’ moment.

What advice would you give to a trainee colourist?
Step outside your comfort zone – while it may feel intimidating at first, it's the best way to grow and evolve as a hairdresser.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learnt from being a colourist?
The biggest lesson we've learned as colourists is that there’s no 'I' in team. Collaboration and effective communication are key, as working together leads to truly remarkable achievements.

This look symbolises the beauty of letting go, leaving past experiences behind and restarting fresh with a new outlook. The lighter root represents new beginnings and the darker lengths and ends represent the beauty of past experiences.

FREE SPIRIT

A buzzed haircut offers so much room for creative expression; I created this look at the TONI&GUY Academy for our Breakthrough team members to showcase the precision of colour application.

FINER DETAILS, BY MICHELA

This look is influenced by the stunning natural colours of nebulae, featuring bold, saturated neon hues. The two pink shades used here, Rose Quartz and Peach Echo, were carefully chosen to create a striking contrast in the hair’s texture.
