Celebs go back to their roots

HJI Hearts logo.bmpchanel-roots.jpgVisible roots have been a fashion statement for a few seasons now, and if the Chanel Couture show is anything to go by, they'll be sticking around a little longer yet.

The 2010 haute couture show from uber-designer Karl Lagerfeld featured several models with dirty blonde roots, in stark contrast to the opulent collection's perfectly preened feel.

And while Madonna made visible roots famous a couple of years ago, the grungy look has been picked up by all sorts of A-listers for summer.

With fashion celebrating the return of grunge for Autumn/Winter, this low-maintenance style could well be one to watch. David Baird, owner of Livingstone's Hair in Kibirnie, Ayrshire is a fan. "It seems that far from being a no-no, roots on show are now becoming a good way to get noticed!" he comments. "It's definitely more edgy than having perfect colour, and these ladies are not shy about hiding their natural brown."

Sarah Jessica Parker visible rootsSarah Jessica Parker always keeps a finger on the fashion pulse, and these dark roots give just a hint of edge to her glamorously waved locks.

Olsen twins visible rootsOften accused of being a little bag lady in their wardrobe choices, the Olsen twins are unsurprising adoptees of this grungy trend. Despite the fact that their outfits are probably worth a few hundred thousand dollars, Mary-Kate and Ashley do festival chic better than most!

Marisa Miller visible rootsA surprising fan of the trend is FHM's official sexiest woman on the planet, Marisa Miller. The glamorous model keeps her look from being too Barbie with dark, very visible roots.

"On Marisa especially, the darker hair creates the illusion of more depth and gives off a gutsier feel," comments David. "On the Olsen twins' straight hair, the dark roots look purposeful and give them great attitude, and the darker shades look equally alluring and funky on SJP's waves."

So how can clients pull off roots without looking like they've just skipped a colour appointment? "What makes the hair work particularly well on Sarah Jessica Parker and Marissa is that they both sport the grungy, rock chick dark roots, but combine them with feminine outfits. It's this unusual mixture that makes it look great. They pull it off brilliantly and it looks like it's a deliberate fashion statement, rather than a case of they just haven't got around to doing their hair!"
