Bridal hair and getting older

I attended a wedding in the windy county of Lancashire over Easter. It was a beautiful setting, in a village church overlooking the sweeping hills of Pendle. The bride wore an original 1950s wedding dress, and her hair was styled to match. With a feature to write on bridal hair for the next issue of HJ, I took note. But all I really learned was what an individual choice bridal hair is.
I also have a feature on men's grooming coming up and I can sympathise with any man who is approaching 40, but still wants to look fashionable.I'm just about to visit Rush in Sutton to get my own locks cut - and I have no idea what to ask for. At 38, I'm at that cusp age between being middle-aged and still young enough to carry off something other than a short-back-and sides.
I also have extremely thick, wiry hair that curls upwards and outwards as it grows - a hairdressers' nightmare.
Any advice?
