The team at Betties and Baldwins Bristol have transformed a 'woodchip, magnolia, 70s paradise' into a stylish streamlined space, designed entirely by the trio of salon owners.
"We took inspiration from our favourite imagery and eras," say salon owners Kadi Carter, Darren Uren and Esme Walton. "The salon name, Betties + Baldwins, is a playful reference from the 90s film Clueless while 50s and 60s hair and beauty salons with their linear styling sections, hood dryers, light-up make up mirrors and chequered floors were our strongest influence for the design."
Attracted by the size and natural light of the premmises, the team spent a month removing partition walls and disused fittings - as well as removing all the woodchip that took up so much of the former office space.
After "a lot" of time spent browsing
Pinterest for inspiration, the team chose a colour scheme selected from Pantone colour charts so that they could specifically match everything; from the walls to the price lists to the trollies. Graphic designers
Never Know Defeat created logos and patterns and, for branding purposes, the team made the decision to use their creations on the walls of the salon too. This was realised by
Soulful Creative who handpainted the whole place and the colours and patterns now serve as area-defining divisions while keeping the overall space unified.
Rather than relying on salon-specific suppliers, most of the furniture was sourced from eBay and other vintage stores - including styling chairs dating from 1959, which were found in almost pristine condition. The waiting are also houses a retro coffee table and 1960s hood dryer chair which does have space for a dryer - which the trio promise they will be utilising!
