So, the second to last episode of MTV’s Beauty School Cop Outs has aired and the end draws ever closer. Poor Dan. I didn’t realise until after he’d left how unhappy he was. As you know, I have no idea what’s going on inside the house as I’m only concerned with the professional side. He’s such a sweetheart but maybe beauty isn’t for him. Don’t worry; I haven’t given up on him. It’s definitely been about the characters rather than the industry, which I feel has been a missed opportunity. In the past seven weeks I’ve had so many tweets from young people asking about the industry. It’s been amazing but the producers know TV better than me and I’ll let them get on with it as long as they don’t dis my industry. In the salon we are now opening seven days a week until Christmas Eve, trying to fit in all our clients. We’ve also launched my new department. It’s called the Shave Bar @ Jamilla Paul. Like it? The emphasis is on the ultimate male facial; the wet shave. Now you can see why I was so keen to host training sessions with the Shave Doctor, Mark Sproston and the gloriously inspirational Gary Gill. Mark and barber supremo Chris Foster have spent a lot of time with the guys developing their barbering skills and it seems to be paying off. Beside the bit of drama with Jeremy forgetting his scissors. Can you imagine one of your staff doing that? Oh yes, actually, me too. No one does it twice in my salon, though. By the way, did you notice HJ Men in the magazine file? It’s become a must for any self-respecting barber and I’ve been poring over back issues ever since I decided to launch The Shave Bar. A bit more training and practice and Richard might make it as barber. Meanwhile, the girls and Calvin were in the photo studio attached to my salon to do avant garde. Scarlett knew fine well it wasn’t ‘avant garden’, but if she wants to play up to the cameras, she can just get on with it. Next week is the last week. But there is a daytime version being launched next week which will start, I believe, with the Adam Reed/Wella shoot that we did with the cast. I’m not sure even now if they realise how privileged they were to work with Adam. And the show is now on in 29 countries. It hasn’t really come over in the show, but I feel everyone in the cast is really developing as a professional. Calvin and Tara definitely have potential for a career in hair, while Sacha is leaning towards make-up. But Jeremy’s plan to open a full-service male grooming centre in Dublin might not have quite as much as a future as he hopes. Only time will tell.
