Move over the trends of last year...are bottleneck bangs taking over for 2022?
The daintier version of curtain bangs - bottleneck bangs feature a shorter section of hair in the centre to create a small ledge just above the brow, with longer tapered sections going outwards, falling around the cheekbone.
Tom Smith, hair stylist and international creative director for Evo, has been a big advocate for the bottleneck bang trend.
"These bangs take inspiration from the neck of a bottle, starting slim and shorter in the middle, curving longer around the eyes, and then the longest following the line of the cheekbone. This allows the length and angle to be adjusted on whether you want to make your cheekbones appear wider, stronger or more narrow. They also give a softness when tying your hair into a bun or ponytail as you can leave them out to face frame," says Tom.
How do you create the look? Tom says: "Bottleneck Bangs follow a standard triangular-shaped fringe section. Tailor the width and depth of the triangular section to suit the hair type you are working on and the desired result. I like to first cut a guide for the shortest central part of the fringe that sits between the eyebrows and the longest part that should finish somewhere between the cheekbones and the jaw."
The trend began with Margot Robbie's Vogue cover back in August 2021, with the actress sporting a caramelised brunette do' - complete with a bottleneck bang.

Predicted to be a big trend for 2022, will your clients be requesting bottleneck bang bookings this spring?
Barry Maddocks, creative director of Haringtons, says his clients are already booking in:
"The bottleneck bangs are EVERYTHING - already so many of my clients are obsessed with them, they are super sexy and super effortless. I love how versatile these bangs are you can vary the length and texture without the client feeling like they are hiding behind a massive fringe! I can definitely see these taking over this year."
I think the Bottleneck Bangs will be a huge trend this year – they are a natural progression from the curtain bangs that were huge in 2021. I’m already seeing fashion-forward bloggers and influencers debuting them, thanks to how sophisticated they look, so I’m expecting the trend to really blow up!
The versatile look is made to suit all clients - as it can be altered to match ad flatter their face shape. November Collective's Christopher Laird thinks the trend will be massive this year:
