A home from home at halo in harrogate

Chris Burton and Joseph Ferraro had run their successful Halo salon in Harrogate for six years, but the time had come when they had to leave their small four-station premises and move to a more prominent location on the south side of the town.

Named after a classic Vidal Sassoon haircut, the salon moved to a former bicycle shop, which was in good condition and was transformed into a relaxed, comfortable salon in just two months.

"We wanted to create a cosy, cool salon with a lounge-like feel that clients will feel at home in," explains Joseph. A team of clients, family and friends worked together to bring Joseph and Chris's vision to life. While the décor was simple, the colourful Liberty Grape lights add a dramatic statement in the reception area, contributing towards the relaxed ambience and adding a contemporary edge. In contrast, lights above the work stations are utilitarian and cool.

While the salon is open plan, each area is clearly defined - the styling stations are at the front of the salon, the backwashes at the rear, the reception opposite the entrance and a beauty room in the basement.

Clients can relax as soon as they enter the 1,600sq ft salon on two giant leather sofas in the waiting area. Adding to the contemporary feel are scaffold-style shelves which house the retail products.

"The industrial feel is a running theme throughout the salon," explains Joseph. "The mirrors at the styling stations are made from polished steel to match the metal inlay on the reception desk. In fact, the metalwork was one of the most expensive parts of the refit."

Now up and running, Joseph and Chris are delighted with the look of their business. "We have created a cosy salon which our clients like to relax in while they are waiting and both clients and team feel like it is home from home."
