A day in the life: samantha skelly, front of house
I wake up at 5.30am to the sound of my alarm - Firework by Katy Perry - and normally end up hitting snooze a few times before I manage to get myself out of bed. I shower, have breakfast and read the first few pages of the newspaper before bolting out of the door to catch the 6.59am train to Victoria. On the way to work in Marylebone I have a quick pit stop at Starbucks for my triple grande extra hot soy latte and have a little catch up with Jose, my favourite Spanish barista!
I arrive at the salon about 7.30am. Firstly I do all the necessities; turn on computers, lights, unlock doors, put the music on, light candles, make sure the salon is absolutely perfect before the team arrives . I then get myself organised, do my hair (a luxury of the job) and prepare for 8:30am - show time.
My morning is very structured; checklists ensure I'm on time and on track. I report all the sales and performance from the previous day and post it up in the staffroom for my team to see. I then analyse the diary for the next day, maximizing potential by minimizing wasted time. I review for potential up-sales, and aim to create and develop more business for the day.
To fully maximize my time I plan out hour by hour what I need to be working on in my diary. My day never goes exactly as it's planned due to the busy nature of the salon, but having an indication is very helpful. My afternoons consist of dealing with external companies, any client concerns and assisting the team with their concerns.
I generally finish about 6.30pm, although this can vary dependent on workload and meetings. It's very rare I leave work to go straight home. A great number of my evenings are spent on the dance floor at Danceworks, training in either contemporary or hip hop. I'm very fortunate to have such a diverse friendship group who are very musical. Many of which have regular gigs across London which I tend to visit quite often. Testing out new restaurants and hosting dinner parties with friends is also something I enjoy, I love food!
