A day in the life: ken picton, salon owner
On a normal day I get up around 6.30am, we are all early risers in my house, then make some coffee, check my emails and my bank (this is a must for me and it has become a habit.) Then some days if I don't need to rush to work it's the gym then shower and into work. Generally my working week consists of Mon-Wed: office, seminars or shoots, then Thurs-Sat: clients. I try to keep this consistent and not to cross over as much as possible.
My office is based at the salon in Cardiff Bay - I live about 10-15 minutes away and drive to work.My business is a 6500sq ft hair and beauty salon, employing 42 staff and offering multi services (including food, dentistry, make up, nails...)
On my office days, it's generally all about getting on with to my to-do list! I always have an ongoing one that never seems to end, I touch base with my managers and have a check of the salon, I always have a walk around everywhere, including stock room, toilets etc. to check on everything and make sure everything looks ship shape, After 21 years it's become a habit and I can see if something is not right immediately. Fridays always start with a staff meeting 9 till 10 am - my time to touch base with my team.
Afternoons are very similar to the mornings, either in meetings or on the phone, or dealing with my staff and managers. As I cut hair three days a week the other three are crammed with managing or doing shoots or seminars, or press quotes, which is why my I live by my philosophy of getting everything done when it needs to be done, whatever time or day it is, so on my client days I can stay focused on doing my clients (which is very important to me).
I try to get home for 6.30 on my office days so I can see the kids, because on Thursday I'm in work until 9.30pm and I still work Saturdays, so time is precious!!
As I have so many social events with work, when I'm not at those it's at home with the wife and children mostly playing games and chilling watching sport on the tv (or I'm on my laptop working!)
